I think every US Commander-in-Chief has supported Israel, at least since the 1960s. Since they are surrounded by vicious terrorist thugs like Hamas and Hezbollah, its a good thing they have a friend in the USA. The tragedy over there, to me, is that Lebanon is being politically hijacked by Hezbollah and dragged into this conflict. I believe a good 4/5 of their population wants nothing to do with a war with Israel. If only Lebanon was strong enough to do to them what Jordan did to the PLO. Iran is to blame. Hezbollah must be removed from Lebanon. And from the Western Hemisphere.

And highly contentious politics at that.

Yes. For that reason, and because I like Eric, I am going to let it go.

Well it isn't like politics do not get regularly brought into the forum. :? And gee.... lets see.... who was it who started down this particular political twist???? 8)

And Philip -- thanks for not taking the point-counterpoint seriously.

Back to the lyrics...

"One night Billy had a rare old time,
Laughing and singing on the Lebanon line
Came back to camp not looking too pretty
Never even got to see the Holy City
Now Billy's out there in the desert sun
And his mother cries when the morning comes
And there's mothers crying all over this world
For their poor dead darling boys and girls"
What kind of fuckery is this?

What ever happened to that old song
to all those little girls and boys

If I should fall from grace with god
where no doctor can relieve me
if i'm buried neath the sod
the angels won't recieve me

bury me at sea
where no murdered ghost can haunt me
if i rock upon the waves
no corpse can lie upon me

the island it is silent now
but the ghosts still haunt the waves

Twenty fucking five to one
Me gambling days are done
I bet on a horse called the Bottle of Smoke
And my horse won
Bíonn dhá insint ar scéal agus dhá leagan déag ar amhrán

It was deep down in your womb my love
I drank my quart of sin

September is your Purgatory
Christmas is your Heaven
and when the stinking streets of summer
are washed away by rain
at the dark end of a lonely street
that's where you lose your pain

And Young Ned of the Hill, no matter what line because it's one of my favourite songs

As a gambler I'm partial to "bottle of Smoke."

some favorites:

"Twenty fuckin' five to one my gambling days are done.... I bet on a horse called Bottle of Smoke and my horse won."

Theres an old gamblers saying that the next best thing to gambling and winning is gambling and losing. This line capturs the pure joy of winning a bet.

Also partial to, "Like a drunken fuck on a Saturday night, up came the bottle of smoke."

I'm a cardplayer and horses aren't my thing. But, they where my grandfathers, and this song always put me in mind of him. He came over from Ireland between the wars and had no greater pleasure than going to the track and getting a bet down. Living in Vegas I often think the sports books here are not far from his heaven....

He died when I was far too young. I never had a lot to say to him. His accent was 'weird' and put me off. But, I'd love to talk him now that we have a couple vices in common.

"The boys and me are drunk and looking for you
We'll eat your frigging entrails and we won't give a damn"

I went and set the Thames on fire,
Now I must come back down
She's laughing in her sleeve at me,
I can feel it in my bones

"Turns out shes a bloke, tries to give me head" - House of the Gods. The effect was improved when i found out what the words were in the college library when i burst out laughing from complete silence (got kicked out, still laughing)
