"well the wind that blows from haunted graves,
never bring you misery.
may the angels bright watch you tonight
and keep you while you sleep".

I think thats a beautiful lyric and one that I used at my Nans funeral last year when I had to write somethign to say in church.

From the song "Thousands Are Sailing"

Then we raised a glass to JFK
and a dozen more besides.
When I got back to my empty room
I suppose I must have cried

That line in Rain Street, about taking a piss and the toilet moving is for me vintage Shane, not the greatest song ever written, but my favourite track on HELLS DITCH.

I tried to take a late night fix
But the toiled moved so again I missed
Down on Rain Street

This is what Shane sings live nowadays.

there's a tesco on the sacred ground,
where i pulled her knickers down,
while judas took his measly price,
and st anthony gazed in awe at christ,
down rain street

Then they'll take you to Cloughprior and shove you in the ground
But you'll stick your head back out and shout "We'll have another round"

Great topic, great classics...

Surprisingly, no one has mentioned the description of loneliness:
I awoke alone and lonely
In a faraway place
The sun fell cold upon my face
The cracks in the ceiling spelt hell
Turned to the wall
Pulled the sheets around my head
Tried to sleep, and dream my way
Back to you again

For all my disparaging of P&L and how there were too many different ideas thrown into the mix, it's curious then that one of my favourite tracks on it was written solely be Jem, the brilliant " Misty morning...". The spoken word middle section really speaks to me, of a time years ago in a shit-hole of a flat I lived in. Great memories all the same. I actually think it should read " I awoke, so cold and lonely " but I could be wrong.

Wherever we go we celebrate the land the makes us refugees. From fear of priests with empty plates. From guilt and weeping effigies. And we dance.
