We will shortly announce new editions of Red Roses For Me and Peace and Love consisting of entirely remixed versions of both albums. They are exclusively available in a new box set, released October this year, called POGUES 30 which contains all our studio albums in facsimile editions plus a previously unreleased live album of the Pogues featuring Joe Strummer at the London Forum in December 1991.

Transmission ends

May i ask who was in charge of the remixes? Thank you in advance. Peace and love.

Steve Lillywhite has done Peace and Love. The band and Nick Robbins have tweaked Red Roses.

Thank you kindly. That is the best answer I could have wished for. Was Rick Rubin ever considered for the RRFM remix? I ask because I know that at one time you had expressed interest in working with Mr. Rubin. Lastly, and at the risk of asking for too much, any chance these remix projects were documented for posterity and a proper video release? Thanks and praises.

:D Red Roses For Me has always been a favourite but has sadly been accussed by others as badly produced. I see a new reason to like it even more

Any offical live show . :D :D

Great news

P&L sounds a bit muddy, no? With any luck the producer has boosted the vocals, brightened instrumentation and scraped some of the barnacles (overdubs) off of the hull.

There was talk here or somewhere (if I remember right) that the demos - or some of them - are better than the final cuts. What does anyone think?

Looking forward to the the new P&L

Will the bonus tracks be included?

(It'd be odd to have a multi-disc set without "Rainy Night in Soho" and "Body of an American"...)

Yes, fair point about P&L sounding a bit muddy, and again about the overdubs, which make for a very dense sound. Generally I'm not a big fan of remixing work years later but this could be different, and it's great that Steve's doing it.

Not sure there were many demos for P&L to sound much better, to be honest. What I think you might be thinking of is the demos for 'Pogue Mahone', which (based on what I've read) in the general opinion of the band, and I defintely agree, sound much better than the over-produced finished article.

But if you reall want to hear demos that sound better than the final versions, listen to 'Spunk' rather than 'Never Mind the Bollocks" by Sex Pistols!

No. The previous box set is your only man.

Is this a CD boxset or a vinyl boxset? I was a little confuzzled by the reference to "facsimiles" of the original releases...

Right! I've done some rooting about on P+L

GUEST: Anyone agree that the Peace and love demos sound better than the album versions. Just listened to Boat Train and Lorca I thought they were head and shoulders above what appeared on the album. You can hear what Shane is singing for a start.

GregM: I totally agree about the Peace and Love demos. I believe I've read elsewhere that if Steve Lillywhite were to do the album again, he would not try to bolster Shane's vocals like he did--by doubling them up, having other band members sing with him, and so on--his opinion being that those effects detracted more from the songs than weak vocal performances would have. And that's why these demos are so great: unadulterated vocals. I love this version of "Boat Train" and have probably listened to it thirty-some times since getting the box set.

STEVE LILLYWHITE: “I made a mistake with Peace And Love in mixing his voice quietly, which made a weak vocal worse. If I’d turned it up, I could’ve made a weak vocal better. I should apologise to him for that. I feel it could’ve been a much better album if the vocals, even if they were weak, had been louder in the mix. Quite often he would slur his voice a lot, so I would actually move the voice forwards in the track. Now you can do it really easily. In those days, it was quite a big job. I did that on a couple of tracks to try and get his voice more in the right place.”

JEM FINER:“... too much cocaine ... definitely had an effect on [Peace & Love]. I’ve always hated cocaine, and I think it’s responsible for a lot of rubbish that happened round the band. People often turn into complete arseholes – not always, but creative ideas fuelled by cocaine are often just shit. That probably is a problem. There was a lot of over-indulgence, musically. Things became over-complicated …. Everyone wanting their stuff to be heard. The collective ego of the band got fragmented into individual egos. I found it really, really tedious and frustrating and disheartening... ‘USA’ is a case in point of sheer over-indulgence. I’ve got some tapes somewhere of mixes of that that are just incredible where it’s quite sparse. It had this amazing, brooding menace to it, and that sort of got lost. People kept overdubbing stuff more and more and it just lost a lot of its power.”

PHILIP CHEVRON: It has to be said that Shane - indeed, the whole band - was in better shape when we recorded the demos than when we cut the album. By then, disillusion, not to mention various drug cocktails, had set in. We gave Lillywhite an uphill battle from the very beginning. Steve probably made the best choices he could at the time in respect of how to disguise/flatter/enhance/obscure the lead vocals, but he is, I think, right to concede, 20 years later, that there was probably a better way around the problem. Oddly enough, with success there appears to come some unspoken additional pressure from the record company to make records a certain way, with a particular sound etc, and in the event, Steve was trying to make the record as much for the Brothers Warner in the UK and Island Records in the USA as for The Pogues. In an ideal world, these are not incompatible goals, as the previous album proves, but I think this one collapsed as under the weight of expectation as much as it suffered from our own flawed humanity, and it ended up representing the best interests of no one. Amazing it's still a great album, however flawed. What else was there that month, the new Rick Astley?
