Pogue Mahone is a phonetic spelling yes. Many Irish writers have, over the years, adopted the "anglicized" versions of Irish words to serve any number of textual and/or subtextual needs.

The majority of Irish place names in common usage, especially, are phonetic approximations of their Gaelic originals - DROGHEDA = Droichead Atha = The Bridge Over The Ford.

One of Brian Friel's greatest plays "Translations", treats of this subject very movingly. A production of it can currently be seen at the National Theatre in London.

It has always seemed appropriate to me that, with our mixed Irish/English backgrounds, The Pogues should have adopted the Anglo-Gaelic form of póg mo thóin
