Ok, Now that band members post here, I've always been curious... who is the fighter on this album cover, and who came up with the brilliant concept of giving him 11 fingers? Had Looked at it for years before making this realization (I know I'm slow.)

From a
Hotpress interview with Shane (1989):
"Finally then Shane, why did you put a picture of a boxer on the cover of an album called Peace And Love?"
"Nobody seems to know who it is. He obviously wasnt very good cause he didnt get very far (laughs). I like boxin , watchin it I don t like doin it! But anyway somebody, I forget who, found this glass negative of this boxer with no name and we put peace and love on his fists. So he s like sayin Peace And Love or I ll bust your fuckin head in (laughs)."
Maybe someone from the band can say more about it?

I'm a bit foggy on the details, but I think Simon Ryan, our designer, got the picture from a photo library. The guy turned out to be a Scot, by then elderly, but still alive and apparently not greatly chuffed by his new fame.
Simon Ryan is an often overlooked component of the Pogues story.

Simon Ryan, is that (his) name? "Ryan Art" is it? I've constantly looked for "Ryan Art" on the internet and it never seemed to turn up anything.
Aside from the Wake of the Medusa artwork, the only thing I've ever found were the original prints of the dog photos from the Best of and Very best of albums.
Thanks Phil, and yeah, his work is often overlooked. Personally, I love the photography of The Pogues and cover art all over.

He did "Waiting For Herb" also, and the "Fairytale" Sammy Davis/Spider Stacy cover, and several other singles as well.

Do you remeber his name?

For years I thought that was a woman on the Fairytale cover...sorry Spider! (I think it was the hair, and to be honest its mostly shot from behind...)

Can anyone confirm that the boxer on the album cover is the Port Glasgow Boxer Hugh Cameron. Empire Games Bronze medallist in 1938

Hugh Cameron doesn't have eleven fingers, so I'd say that rules him out.

The reason I ask is that his son told me that it was his father. And that he did have 11 fingers.
