what a complete rip-off - catalogue reissue

Post Mon Sep 12, 2005 8:36 pm

Hi, as a loyal supporter of the Pogues for many years, I wonder if there are any fans out there who feel disappointed and let-down by the way in which their old albums have been re-issued.
Why couldn't they have just released an album of previously unreleased tracks like many other bands do rather than release the whole catalogue and add a few extra songs to each of their old albums. Call me naive, but I guess it's because the logic is that mugs like me would want to buy all their old albums again just for the sake of being able to listen to the new tunes. What a complete con. I'd love for any member of the band to explain the rationale behind the decision and tell me if i'm wrong to assume it's just a case of money for old rope.

they are releasing an album of previously unreleased tracks, in fact a box set - no release date yet. you are confusing two separate things. the reissues collect all the relevant bsides from the same sessions as the album with new liner notes and photos. i love them. shop around you can find them brand new for a fiver. if they are not worth a fiver to you don't buy them. it's not rocket science.

Welll ... I'm no member of the band so please don't assume I'm representing them at all here.

From what I've been able to piece together the re-releases were/are intended to accomplish these things:

1) Remastered versions of all the previously released LP tracks to address some of the problems with older production techniques in use at the time of their initial release
2) Refresh the catalog, especially for poorly served markets (e.g. Waiting for Herb and Pogue Mahone are the only two "in-print" offerings for the U.S. market), and
3) To make available the back catalog of EPs, Single B-Sides, etc that fans would otherwise have a great deal of difficulty finding

I suppose an argument could be made that the same could have been achieved by re-releasing the remastered discs without the bonus tracks, and by releasing a new CD containing only the bonus material.

I think that DzM is right on this, especially about PM and Waiting being the only two albums readily available in America, although I did happen to find a few older copies in the store. Yes, this could have been achieved through a boxed set, but they already have so many compilations/sets that it's just more organized this way. If it were done through a boxed set, I most likely wouldn't be buying it as a top priority, so I'm thankful that they did it this way.

Edit: As a side note, I actually find myself listening to the bonus tracks more than I do the ones that are on the original albums.

DzM has it right.

Those of you in the UK, Europe, and Japan, who were able to see the band live back in the day, are already familiar with many of the b-side tracks because they were (and still are) set list staples.

Most of the rest of us were not aware of them until Napster came along. (Even eBay is only ten years old!) So, for us, having these tracks included with the remastered albums is very much appreciated. For one thing, we can save our vinyl.

And I, for one, am thrilled with the remastered versions of the albums. There is a difference.

And some of us only had P&L and Hell's Ditch on vinyl!

To be honest, I'm bloody delighted with the way the reissues were done. They weren't expensive and I'm glad some cash went to the band members rather than in the pockets of the army of bootleggers.

If you have a very good set of head phones or speakers you can tell that there is an undeniable increase in quality. Ive picked up many reissued albums by different artits, but i must say that this series is unbelievable - just great!

Hold up - I don't believe in selling bootlegs.

It's just wrong.
