Pogues in a movie (old movie '96) (Basquiat)

Post Thu Aug 18, 2005 7:18 am

and quite a let down...i left the tv on, while i was reading one afternoon. and a movie started. i didn't really care, too much, untill...i heard the first chord, and immediately recognized the song as one that i knew, and liked, and should lift my head for. by the second chord, i knew it was fairytale... (this is over the opening credits) a pretty star-studded cast. the movie is "Basquiat" the let down comes after Shane sings through the lengthy verse...and EXACTLY at the point the rest of the band should come in the song just starts over. all through the same verse. (i thought they just needed to lengthen the song, and this time 'round they could treat me to..the rest of the song) and EXACTLY at the point that the rest of the band would come in. the song stops.

the movie looked interesting, but i didn't get to see it. has anyone? was it good? why does hearing shane not coming out of my own cd player, and knowing that his songs rang out to many other ears...make me excitedly happy?

It's a pretty good film, actually.

And I know just how you feel - I get the same way when I hear music I love in a film or on the radio (when that actually happens). You hit on it - it's knowing that the song is going out to so many...you feel a strange sort of pride, as if the band were your family or friends, and now everyone will hear how great they are. A couple of weeks ago, I was stunned to hear the Pogues' cover of Honkey Tonk Women on the radio - I think that was a first.

I got the same a few weeks ago.

Just bought "my own private idaho" (The Film  ) I thought that it was a good film. Then the credits start to the old main drag.

the old main drag was very appropriate for "my own private idaho." i was very pleasantly surprised to hear it during the credits

Mr. Wade! Two Tom Waits songs were also in that film. Who Are You and Tom Traubert's Blues. Just adding this because I know you are a fan!

And also Summer In Siam.

For whatever it's worth, I'm holding the jewel case right now. Here's what actually on the soundtracK

1 Van Gogh Boat
2 Public Image (Public Image Ltd)
3 It's all over now, baby blue (Them feat. Van Morrison)
4 Suicide Hotline (Dialogue/Music montage, Nick Marion Taylor)
5 I'm not in love (Toadies)
6 Is that all there is? (PJ Harvey)
7 White Lines (Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel)
8 Rise (Tripping Daisy)
9 These Days (Joy Division)
10 She is dancing (Brian Kelly)
11 Tom Traubert's Blues (Tom Waits)
12 A small plot of land (David Bowie)
13 Summer in Siam (Pogues [sic])
13 The last song I'll ever sing (Gavin Friday)
15 Hallelujah (John Cale)

So while Fairytale may have been used in the film, it is not part soundtrack.

And while the movie may have been dull (I don't know - haven't seen it) I really like this soundtrack. Hallelujah by John Cale is great. Is That All There Is by PJ Harvey is great. The only really weak song I wish had been left off is White Lines by Grandmaster Flash. Geez I hate that song.

I'm with you on that Hallelujah, DzM - Cale's version of it is pretty near perfect. I actually considered getting the "Shrek" soundtrack for it, but for some reason, although Cale's is the version used in the film, the one on the soundtrack is Rufus Wainwright's. Curious,

Gotta part ways with you on "White Lines", though - a pretty damned good one from back in the day, even if they did rip off Liquid Liquid.

My primary complaint isn't against the song per se. It's amusing for what it is. It's just that I have it on about three or four different discs. Once ripped into iTunes and slapped on shuffle that makes the damn song come up more often than more obscure songs that I really like. Took me awhile to realize why I was hearing the song 4 times as often as songs I liked considerably better. :)

lol...well now, whose fault is that?
But your feelings are understandable - even some well-loved songs can go sour after too much repetition.

I have heard on the grape vine that The Pogues actaully have a role in the movie Straight to Hell, along with other greats like Joe Strummer and Elvis Costello.
It is avalible for purchase at Amazon.com and I will get it one day along with If I Should Fall From Grace With God - The Sahne McGowan story.
So be easy and free when your drinking with me..
