I wouldn't let it concern you. If you look at Shane's entire body of work, he says that to just about everyone at one time or another. I never got the impression that he had a special dislike for America or Americans. Perhaps on the days he wrote those things, something about us "yanks" just really pissed him off. It's kind of like the things Americans say about Canadians from time to time. We don't really mean it.....do we?

ok... thanks for the replies. I guess if Shane and I had a few pints of Guinness I might call him an "Irish bastard" or something...

sheva wrote:Well, hmm...it's true there isn't much of a melody here, and in fact it sometimes calls to mind "Three Blind Mice". But the arrangement on the studio version - ah, now that's a great sound. A fine framework on which to hang such perfect lyrics.
Its also the same melody as balamory from childrens bbc. It is like a nursery rhyme in a way i suppose. One to sing to the kids before bed.

Pansy Americans. You should hear what Shane has said about the English, and he's basically English himself.

I'm an American, and I see nothing Anti-American about the lyrics "F*** the Yanks!" It's just a brilliant, hilarious line -- it jumps out from nowhere, yet makes sense in the heat of the moment.
It's really hard to say anything truly Anti-American, because it's so flattering that we can consistently remain the topic of conversation.

That's a Wildean concept, isn't it?
"The only worse than being talked about, is NOT being talked about"

I don't wish to fuel the fire but there is that bit on "Across The Broad Atlantic" where Shane says, "God Bless America... NOT."
Though personally I prefer to think that he is referring to the concept of Americanism, rather than individual Americans per se.
Whatever, Shane often contradicts himself anyway (read "A Drink With..." for ample evidence of this), so if I were the American chappy commenting above, I wouldn't worry about it, honestly.
Also (and finally), both "Bottle..." and "The Body Of..." are awesome songs, and that's all that matters. To me anyway.
Over and out.

He's not English, you cunt. His parents, living in Tipperary, were visiting relatives in England over christmas and Shane was born on christmas day. Three months later they returned to Tipperary where Shane lived until nearly age 7, the most critical of anybody's life. He feels that a lot of his problems began when the family moved to London. You cunt.

This song is one of the many highlights on the pogues concerts. I think on the Hell's Ditch tour it was not played up to the reunion 2001.
