Most underrated Pogues Album/Song

Post Mon Mar 22, 2004 4:41 am

Hey all,
Just wondering what your pick of the most underrated Pogues album/song is.

My vote: "Waiting For Herb" Album. While The Pogues lost a lot with Shane's exit, I feel WFH proved they can still kick ass and take names :)

I always kinda thought that Sea Shanty was an underatted song....It never seems to make much of a mention among "the greatest" tunes that MacGowan had ever wrote, but I think that its definetly up there for its humour and poetry......
Also, they rarely ever played it live! :?

yeah "Sea Shanty" is a very good song

But if I had ten pounds then I'd raise a loud cheer
And I'd toast all me neighbours both distant and dear
And I'd shoot back great belly-crippling buckets of beer
And a pox and a curse on the people round here
Wouldn't give you me the price of a half pint of beer
Wouldn't give you me the price of a cup of good cheer
A pox and a curse on the people round here

and so is "Down in the ground..."

Been drunk as a skunk since I've been home
From bar to bar like a ghost I roamed
I can't forget those things I saw
Been down with the devil in the Dalling [?]
One place I don't want to go

correct me if im wrong but isnt the [?] = road

underrated song

Down all the Days is a lovely song and quite possibly the only song involving toe-typing and nose-guzzling. London You're a Lady is awesome also Come to the Bower

If not the most underrated song, one that was only a B-side which I think deserves more ears and could have been a favorite track if so is "Train Kept Rolling On" Anyone ever noitice the pogues have at least four songs with TRAIN in the title... and all of them are great? (Boat Train, Night Train to Lorca, and Train of Love as the others)

re. best under-rated song??

Post Fri Dec 24, 2004 12:31 am

Got to be 'And the band played Walzing Matilda'

Why??

Well the pogues did not write the original lyrics - think it was written by a first world war poet - but

Sian make the poem alive with such emotion. As with a number of pogues songs (such as dirty old town and navigator) he has made it his own. This song is the most under-rated that they have done and what a fitting song to end rum Rum Sodomy & The Lash on..

I just wonder ehat kind of reception would he get if they ever did it live??
Mad about the pogues
