Maybe you are right. I'd even go as far as to say "probably" right. But its a long way off. You, nor I, nor my kid will see any clear sign of that time coming about. But some day.

Like maybe when the aliens land. Or the super virus sweeps across the planet and wipes half of us out, and we obliterate each other in the resultant power vacuum..... then it might happen. Or maybe after the huge nuclear religious war in which tens of millions die and a race of South Asian mutants (from the fallout) emerge with some kind of super power/advantage. Or a Messiah comes and we all fall in line or die.

Funny, I have always thought that song was referring to Ireland. Learn sumpin new every day.
What kind of fuckery is this?

I've recently thought it could be written from the point of a suicide bomber.

"if I should fall from grace with god where no doctor can relieve me, if I'm buried neath the sod, but the angels won't receive me"

"this land was always ours, was the proud land of our fathers, it belongs to us & them & not to any of the others"

One of the main grievences Islamic suicide bombers have is the western occupation of Islamic countries. Was actually a Tunisian guy who lives with some friends who first suggested this to me

To add to Emily Dickinson, it was some years ago when I read Moby Dick that it clicked.

"Believe ye, men, in the things called omens? Then laugh aloud, and cry encore! For ere they drown, drowning things will twice rise to the surface; then rise again, to sink for evermore. So with Moby Dick--two days he's floated--tomorrow will be the third. Aye, men, he'll rise once more,--but only to spout his last!

D'ye feel brave men, brave?"

I always thought that the song honored Spanish Civil War veterans. I know that Shane started writing it while The Pogues were in Almeria, Spain filiming Straight to Hell.

i have a question because of this phrase in the song

This land was always ours
Was the proud land of our fathers
It belongs to us and them
Not to any of the others

Let them go, boys
Let them go, boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry

it sounds very strange for me .. i dont know if this song has a big background or such things but it sounds a bit ... hm ... nationalistic
could somebody please say me whats the sence of this song or on what its based on? and sry for my english, im from germany

Among other things, the song is a response to the shameful attempt by the Australian government to sideline the Aboriginal presence and history during their "bicentennial" celebrations.
I just pulled out an old, dusty copy of Midnight Oil's "Diesel and Dust" Great music, and there is definitely a Pogue-ish feel to it. It has inspired me to do some more research into Australian politics.
