If i should fall from grace with god

Post Sun May 21, 2006 12:18 am

hi,
i have a question because of this phrase in the song

This land was always ours
Was the proud land of our fathers
It belongs to us and them
Not to any of the others

Let them go, boys
Let them go, boys
Let them go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry

it sounds very strange for me .. i dont know if this song has a big background or such things but it sounds a bit ... hm ... nationalistic
could somebody please say me whats the sence of this song or on what its based on? and sry for my english, im from germany

thats a paraphrase of another song, a woodie guthrie song though adopted as an irish song
It's not the creed nor nationality that counts, it's the man himself

Among other things, the song is a response to the shameful attempt by the Australian government to sideline the Aboriginal presence and history during their "bicentennial" celebrations.

Thank you Philip. And still it continues; now we are sweeping a whole NEW generation of blackfellas under the white carpet at Yarralumla. Child abuse? Incest? Rape and other violence? "Oh, yes, the statistics show that in Aboriginal outback communities..." Statistics my arse, another excuse for racist redneck fuckwits to ignore this country's original inhabitants by implying that things occur in 'their' communities but not in ours....

I've always thought the lyrics quoted above were a trenchant piss-take on jingoistic nationalism. I just received a copy of Lebor Gabala Erenn from the Irish Texts Society; and from my readings over the years of Irish mythology/history, and the newly arrived book, I have deduced that Ireland has been settled/invaded by different ethnic groups at least 6 times so far that I can think of right now. No-one can claim a land as being exclusively theirs. Arrant nonsense. The land owns us, not the other way around.

One day, as I mentioned in Washington DC in March, there will be none of these spurious claims to ownership of "sovereign" territory. Mexicans will return to "their" lands in the United States with or without the permission of George Bush and half a nation of fear-ridden, hypocritical xenophobes; Polacks and Somalians will walk down Dublin's O'Connell Street unimpeded by resentment, bitterness and the all-too-unquenched fires of Catholic values.

Thousands are sailing and will continue to do so. Everyone else - get over it, you've only maybe 80 years all told to make your own life more interesting.

Got this info from poguetry.com , a nice site of Annotated Pogues lyrics...

"The imagery of going down for the third time is pretty common in the literature. For instance, here's Emily Dickinson's take on it (from poem 92 in the Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, ISBN: 1-58734-007-0)

'Drowning is not so pitiful
As the attempt to rise.
Three times, 'tis said, a sinking man
Comes up to face the skies,
And then declines forever
To that abhorred abode ' "

^^Errr and to answer your question, "coming up threes boys" was a phrase used by sailors when someone fell/was thrown overboard. If they bobbed up three times they were fucked (for want of a better word).

Did you hear the one about the QLD indigenous minister who drunk wine on the plane, making her way to 'dry out' an aborigine township?
