My own best of

I have a dilemma, a dilemma that has been troubling me and occupying my mind for the last week or so.
You see, a friend of mine wants a 10 song introduction to The Pogues. My friend, let's call her Rosie, because that is her name, is rather insistent on there being only ten songs on this collection. Lord knows why.
And here is the dilemma, do I chose my favorite songs or do I chose popular ones that I happen not to adore like Streams, Young Ned and Fiesta? Do I chose stuff I know she will like such as Love You Till The End but which isn't that representative of the rest of the material. I have drafted and redrafted and tredrafted a list of suitable songs but to no avail. Mr C's struggles on the box-set must have been immense.

Rain Street
Recruiting Sargeant
Old Main Drag
Sayonara
Auld Triangle
The Gentleman Soldier
Bottle Of Smoke
Thousands
The Ghost Of A Smile
Broad Majestic Shannon
The ten I'd pick in no particular order.
Lullaby Of London and
Waxie's Dargle too.

But that'd be 12.

Trust me on this! Here are the ten you should put on the list, in this order.
Streams Of Whiskey
Boys From The County Hell
The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn
The Old Main Drag
A Pair Of Brown Eyes
Sally MacLennane
Dirty Old Town
If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Fairytale Of New York
Rainy Night In Soho

Streams Of Whiskey
Boys From The County Hell
The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn
The Old Main Drag
Dirty Old Town
If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Fairytale Of New York
Rainy Night In Soho

I would agree with these selections as well, was actually debating between BMS and Brown Eyes.

Now I feel downright dirty agreeing with NJR twice in one week. I'm jumping in the shower right after this episode of Dexter I'm watching...

The Pogues: Bringing people together AND causing unscheduled showering for nearly thirty years.

Haven't we been here before? Just buy her the Ultimate Collection. The band will get their share too.

If it's an introduction for a complete beginner I'd go with:
Body Of An American
Sally MacLennane
Streams Of Whiskey
Boys From The County Hell
The Sick Bed Of Cuchulainn
A Pair Of Brown Eyes
Dirty Old Town
Turkish Song Of The Damned
Rainy Night In Soho
Fairytale Of New York
I think. Today. Although I'd then say to the friend in question, Forget this list and have a borrow of my copy of The Ultimate Collection. And don't forget to listen to the live CD that comes with it, because that gives you a little taster of what an actual gig is like...

For me, as it is an introduction, I'd put (and not in this order) the following:
I'm A Man You Don't Meet Everyday
Body Of An American
Fairytale of NY
A Pair of Brown Eyes
Sally MacLennane
Streams of Whiskey
Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham 6
Broad Majestic Shannon
Thousands Are Sailing
Turkish Song of the Damned
Close competition would be:
And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda
My Baby's Gone
Bottle of Smoke
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
