We also pre-filmed "Fiesta" for Top Of The Pops when it went in at #24 but they had already filled the show's quota of new entries that week. This was unusual in those days - #24 would ordinarily have been quite a high new entry then and would usually have guaranteed an appearance on the show. The BBC asked us to pre-record the next week's show, confident that the single would go higher in the charts. We were about to go off on tour and would not have been able to appear the next week. Alas, the record went down and our "Fiesta" has never, as far as I know, appeared.

Something similar happened when Poguetry In Motion was at #29 (we were in America) but we did not actually film anything that time.

Simon, the rules have changed over the years, from both the Musicians Union and the BBC. On "Fairytale", Shane is obviously miming/chewing gum, whereas Kirsty is miming quite plausibly to her rerecorded vocal (with the arse/ass change). By "Tuesday Morning", TOTP were demanding live lead vocals. On "The Irish Rover", when Spider was away filming in Nicaragua, the Union required that a deputy whistle player be found (I seem to remember Sean Cannon from the Dubliners got the job). And yet, I don't think anyone was bothered that we had no harpist and string orchestra or french horn for "Fairytale". Go figure.

The TOTP studio was such an unpleasant cattleshed for bands and audiences, that we were mostly content to get a little tipsy and mime, treat it as a day out in Elstree. That said, I just got an amazing bootleg DVD of some 60s "live" appearances on German, US and UK telly progs - great performances from Sir Douglas Quintet, Troggs, Vanilla Fudge, Bobby Fuller Four, Standells, Strangeloves, Seeds, Iron Butterfly, Count Five, ? and the Mysterions etc etc. Terrific stuff - inimitable.

On the other hand, recently my other band the Radiators played "Television Screen" on Irish TV and the sound was so terrible, we wished we hadn't bothered.

So I guess the jury is still out on that one.

Shane & The Popes with Johnny Depp did That Womans Got Me Drinking. It was a classic performance. At one point Shane falls to his knees (on purpose!). Its one of the best TOTP perfomances, great rock n roll. I thought Fiesta was on the Pops (must be another show, maybe '88 Town and Country). Certainly Irish Rover was performed. I though there were many more...
