To The Pogues + Any one interested,

For the past 4 years Fairytale of New York has been in the UK and Ireland Christmas charts reaching no higher the No. 3. A few friends and I are planning that this year we should make it reach No. 1 but we need everyone's help where possible.

There are a few questions we do have that might make this simpler and make more people help the song get there:

First of all we want to know if some of the profits still go to charity (Justice for Kirsty and a mixture of homeless charities).

Secondly we also want to make sure that we won't be break any copyright laws by posting this group on the social network Facebook.


If anyone could get back to us about with this information, we would appreciate it greatly.

And to any one else that happens to read this and love the song as much as we do please join the event below under Attending or as a Maybe and invite all your friends to be apart of finally getting this song to it's rightful place, as the UK and Irelands Christmas No.1.

You may or may not be aware that there already exists a group with similar aims. They are not connected to or allied with The Pogues in any way.

In a year in which X Factor will be competing with 2 minutes of silence and John Cage's 4'33" (ie 4 minutes thirty three seconds of, if not quite silence, then at least a lack of pre-assembled noise) for Xmas Number One, I don't much fancy your chances, but good luck anyway. Me, I'm rooting for John Cage, though I'll take the Number One if we get it.

On the matter of royalties, all royalties for "Fairytale of New York" go to the Pogues and [the estate of] Kirsty MacColl unless, as has happened a handful of times in the past 23 years, both parties, and their record company, waive royalties in favour of one or more charities. This year, in other words, Santa will be visiting us as usual, assuming people actually still want to hear the song.

I think this is the sort of campaign that can only happen once. The RATM against Joe McEldery of last year only worked because it had the monopoly of facebook users, now there's hundreds of these groups trying get everything from Surfin' Bird to Ace of Spades at No1. Best of luck with it, though.

I've also started a campaign to get Fairytale to number 1 this Christmas, unaware of any other Facebook sites dedicated to this. If anyone wants to add to it, feel free. Hopefully it can happen this year, especially with it being the 10th anniversary of Kirsty's tragic death
