In theory a properly mixed DVD Audio gives you a fuller, more immersive listening experience. Like watching a movie with stereo sound vs watching a movie with Dolby surround sound.

In this case it's a total rip off since the source material is a stereo radio broadcast. No matter how much you polish this turd it's still going to be a turd.

Well put DZM.

I've got a soft spot Sketches of Spain and also Shanne Bradley....come to think of it, most of the instrumentals the Pogues do are fairly decent compared to those of some other bands...

I'm glad I could help. We're starting with crap source material (a recorded radio broadcast) so no amount of audio wizardry will make it sound good.

Here's a couple more pithy comments to help sort my thoughts on this release on DVD audio, and on this release in general:

Regardless of how much lipstick you put on a pig before you kiss it, you're still kissing a pig.

Crappy source material makes the listening experience like getting an audio-cock in the ear.

Fancy media doesn't make the buyer or the band any less exploited.

These fucktards are abusing a copyright loophole to screw the band and its fans out of hard earned money. And they're doing it over and over by re-releasing the same crap under different names and with different media formats every couple of years. They're little better than George Lucas and his never ending quest to destroy the fond childhood memories people my age have of Star Wars and its two sequels. Ass-hats one and all.

This isn't a Pogues instrumental per se, but I've always wished they'd released an instrumental version of "Fairytale of New York" as a B-side or bonus track somewhere. Not that the vocals aren't stellar -- I mean, that's the song that made me fall absolutely in love with Kirsty MacColl's voice -- but there's just so much going on instrumentally on that one and it's all so gorgeous that I'd love to be able to really hear it all.

To raise from coarse barns to poetic heights: A rose by any other name would smell as sweet – and a bootleg on any fancy media would sound as bad. :) The trouble is I still enjoy the recording (plain CD version aka pig without a lipstick). Some like it hot, some like it cold... and some can even stand pigs. Though of course, I’d rather stuff my hard earned money elsewhere than to pockets of those copyright-abusing "fucktards" and "ass-hats". (Every day one learns new, useful vocabulary here... ;))

Not to stray away from the original topic, instrumentals, I have always found it funny how popular Kesh Jig is – it seems to jump out at me from nearly every CD. :) Anyway, the way it bridges Sea Shanty verses is cool.

I always liked the tune we stuck on the end of "The Parting Glass" when we played it live although, as Mr Woods is not nearby, I couldn't tell you its title. I don't believe we ever recorded it. Also, the tune at the end of "South Australia".
