I read somewhere that " Hell's ditch " contains more Shane songs that have been covered by other artists than any other Pogues album . I find this extraordinary. I know Christy Moore did a version of " Summer in Siam " but I haven't heard of any others. Anybody know of any other covers ? Christy also did " A pair of brown eyes " and " Fairytale..." I think.

Cheers for that DzM , I released half way through the list that I should have been doing that all along myself.
Big up the mods.

dsweeney's and Phillip's contributions to the covers discussion have also moved to the
topic already in progress.

Gonna buy this for a friend who came across the Pogues a few weeks ago. It's his birthday very soon

Good one.

A bit quiet here lately so I'm probably talking to myself but what the hell. Does anybody know if " Sit down by the fire " was ever performed live ? Almost every other Pogues track has a video on the net except this. For me, it is the great " lost track " on " ....Grace", a Pogues classic that could have been on " Red roses..."

According to a post by Philip from '06: "Sit Down By The Fire" was only ever once played correctly."
And that was the studio version

So sadly no live versions.

Thanks for that Alex, I suspected as much.Killer track with a rather complicated time signature and difficult to nail live I'd say. I think I read James saying somehwere it was one of the tracks he was most proud of, getting it down finally.Personally I love it, a wild thing between the beautiful " Lullaby..." and " The broad majestic..."
One other thing you may be able to help with, something that has bugged me for years. Have you any ideas as to to what Shane sings at the end of " USA " ? The fade-out ? Any lyric sheet I can find never seems to have it.All I can come up with is either " ..don't come here no more, don't come..." or maybe " ..drunk drunk here I come drunk, drunk drunk..." It 's obviously some ad-lib by Shane and therefore not included in the lyrics.

Have a listen to
Gris Gris by Dr John. "I Walk on Gilded Splinters"

This one - the original album recording - is perhaps closer in spirit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL0Pun9ntjMA lyrics search yields this:
Kon kon, the kiddy kon kon
Walk on gilded splinters
Kon kon, the kiddy kon kon
Walk on gilded splinters
which I suppose leaves us no closer, substantively, to answering your actual question.

Wow, cheers for that guys, you nailed it.100% correct what it is. But as you say, we'd have to ask Dr. John what it actually means. Lyrically I can't for the life of me make any connection with " USA " . More likely Shane felt it fit musically, which it does, seamlessly. At least I can sing along with it, even if I don't know what it is I'm singing.Cheers again.

A bit of research revealed Paul Weller does a version of it and it's in an episode of " The Wire", which of course has The Pogues throughout the series.

It's an iconic piece of Americana and, specifically, of New Orleans. The
Peace and Love album has a number of reference points to both. In addition, we had just done a week of TV shows in Rome with Dr John.
