Now THERE's a name a haven't heard in a looong time, we must be around the same age. It's heartening to see The Pogues still going strong and who the hell even talks about Rick Astley any more?

As for "Thousands...", where the tenor banjo comes in and the vocals trails off on "And We danced to the music and we danced to the music and we danced..." well that must be one of the best musical moments of all time, tension building and releasing at the same time. Brilliant.

Mr. Astley gets invoked far more than you might realize (though less now than five years ago).

What's truly sad/shocking/nauseating is my 14 year-old son has "Never Gonna Give You Up" on his iPod (got turned onto it from the whole Rickroll thing last year) and will torture his parents by singing it often.

Nice picture of a wall with two heads.

Wait, this was actually used as a recent reissue cover because Bowie wouldn't allow a picture of the two together?

This is terrifying.

The Auld Triangle
Broad Majestic Shannon
Old Main Drag
Bottle of Smoke

I feel like I've heard Auld Triangle once live. I think. Never heard Rain Street, which I love.

Has to be Rainy Night in Soho for all time, with The Auld Triangle second, but there's always another 2 or 3 or 5 I crave hearing on any given day. Recently it's been these rotating...

Rocky Road to Dublin
Bottle of Smoke
Body of an American
Rake at the Gates of Hell
Medley with The Recruiting Sergeant/Rocky Road/Galway Races
Birmingham Six
Misty Morning, Albert Bridge
The Irish Rover
Shanne Bradley
Maidrin Rua

These, too:

Boat Train demo
NW3
Broad Majestic Shannon
Lullaby of London demo
Infinity
White City
Boys from the County Hell
Mountain Dew
Jack's Heroes
Haunted
London Girl
A Pair of Brown Eyes
Sick Bed of Cuchulainn
Poor Paddy

So basically I can't answer this question. Well, I can, as seen above, but I don't really want to. :)

This question is reminiscent of the movie Sophie's Choice.

Wow this post is old but I can't help but adding my two cents.

I love I'm a Man You Don't Meet Everyday. The lyrics are so eerie and melancholy and Cait's singing is angelic.

But my favorite original Pogues' song would either be Bastard Landlord or Boys from the County Hell. Love the entirety of Bastard Landlord, but those two verses of BFCH really make the song. You know:

But now I've the most charming of verandas
I sit and watch the junkies, the drunks, the pimps, the whores
Five green bottles sitting on the floor
I wish to Christ, I wish to Christ that I had fifteen more...
The boys and me are drunk and looking for you
We'll eat your frigging entrails and we won't give a damn
Me daddy was a blue shirt and my mother a madam
My brother earned his medals at My Lei in Vietnam

Actually now that I think over it more, all of BFCH is absolutely ingenious. I can hardly choose between the three, but I guess I'll have to pick AMYDME as my absolute all time favorite. And there are so many more I wish I could add...
