Post Fri Mar 09, 2007 6:20 pm

Body of an American

2nd runner up = Boys from County Hell (Said I'd always love you...)

3rd runner up = Streams of Whiskey (Any which way the wind...)

Funny I could say that and then there is Rainy Night in Soho, Lullaby of London, Fall from Grace with God etc etc etc, What are these guys the Grateful Dead or Something.

I have just listened to Kitty, about 10 or 20 times, sad it is and I must say that now it is all there is and therfore it is now the song.

You said one word "Kitty" and in that all was said. And when I listen to it I can only think that that will never be me but ironically it is what makes the song so special. I am drunk, and the fool so no matter the reason, no match for any of you.

Carry on.

"Fear of priests with empty plates
and guilt and weeping effigies"

and
"Thousands are sailing
Again across the ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Postcards we're mailing
Of sky-blue skies and oceans
From rooms the daylight never sees
Where lights don't glow on Christmas trees
But we dance to the music
And we dance"

Both from "Thousands are Sailing"

"may the whores of the empire
lie awake in their beds
and sweat as they count out
the sins on their heads
while over in Ireland
eight more men lie dead
kicked down and shot
in the back of the head."

From Birmingham Six

and must be the softie in me, but

"This morning on the harbour
When I said goodbye to you
I remember how I swore
That I'd come back to you one day
And as the sunset came to meet
The evening on the hill
I told you I'd always love you
I always did
I always will"

from Body of an American,
That last part always gets me for some reason and I couldn't even begin to explain why.

I remember a few years back after I'd split up with someone and I was in a right old state, I listened to The Song With No Name all the time and it used to make me feel so very sad but on the other hand it made me feel amazing because it was like the song was speaking to me personally, it was so appropriate. It's a remarkable piece of work, lyrics the like of which have rarely been written, and it is one of those songs which in my opinion is quite definitely, poetry.

I used to sing it with a mate of mine on guitar whenever we went to parties. We used to get compliments after our impromptu drunken performances, and even though I can't sing for shit when I've had a drink, I think I always used to find an extra gear with that one, just because it reaches so far into my soul. An amazing song.

And Sinead's version on TGH is phenomenal too.

...Wow I was really into this post... need a sit down now...

Without a doubt Streams of Whiskey is my no 1 favourite, its going to played at my funeral.

Can't chhose my number 2,3 4 etc i like nearly all but....

Its interesting that so many of you speak highly of Fairytale, as a pop song and Christmas song it is my no1 favourite but as a Pogues song in my opinion its good but not in my top 10.
Cheers

It's hard to choose, It changes alot. When i joined here my favourite was the body of an american- my username. A few weeks ago it was if i should fall from grace with god,i love how he says angels the first time. But about all of them have been my favourite at one point. I love songs that show his voice- i love his voice i love everything every sound about it. At the moment my favourite songs are gentleman soldier and the old main drag. Last week it was turkish song of the damned.

Last night my 5 yr old Jamaica and 6 yr old Seattle decided we should watch some Pogue's videos as they are getting excited about going to the Boston show(s) in March. First off we HAD to watch Dirty Old Town as that is Seattle's favorite. We then watched the rest of the video to the end. Next went back to the start and they both fell asleep during Pair of Brown Eyes (will have to remember that for future sleep sessions).

Today Jamaica was sitting at my desk and wanted to watch her favorite song Fiesta on YouTube which she played about 7 times in a row until I suggested she try FONY. While we were watching this classic she turned to me and said "Shane MacGowan has beautiful songs"

I could not agree with her more.

I think it's "A Pair Of Brown Eyes" for me, all things considered. I've so many 'all time faves', though. Mostly MacGowan numbers, and mostly ballads. That man has to have the deftest touch of any musician living for balladry and romantic verse. Just makes you cry.

Depends on the mood, but for personal reasons I would say "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda".
