A Pistol For Paddy Garcia

Post Sat Dec 11, 2004 7:42 am

I heard the song, on an old copy of RS&tL, I was wondering what inspired it, if anyone knew. It sounds a bit western. It's really puzzled me, since I first heard it, what really inspired it. It doesn't sound like the usual Irish music; but, none-the-less, it is great.

I swear I'm no secret agent of Poguetry.com but let me quote from that web again:

This was the original title for the Alex Cox film featuring the Pogues, Elvis Costello, Courtney Love, and Dennis Hopper that subsequently became "Straight to Hell." Here's some words from Jem about the tune that were included in the 2003 release "Jem Finer (of the Pogues).": "I wrote this during the period in which I became obsessed with Sergio Leone!"

Tá fáilte romhat! :)
Pistol For Paddy Garcia is a great tune. By the way, have you heard the Pogues version of Good, Bad and Ugly, that famous western-style instrumental by Ennio Morricone? Totally crazy – but terrific. :)

It's on the original soundtrack to Straight To Hell:

Amazon.com

It was dropped from the reissue though (Straight to Hell Returns).

It's also on the CD and cassette of Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash, regular and reissue. It's not on the LP, but good luck finding an LP, anyways!

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is on Rum, Sodomy & The Lash?

Umm. No.

Or were you think of "A Pistol for Paddy Garcia"?

One possibility is that during the Mexican American war, a group of Irish Catholic soldiers saw that Catholics in Mexico were not treated as second rate citizen and they switched sides! They fought along side their Catholic counter parts. In the end, Mexico lost and they were all hanged for treason.
