Most underrated Pogues album is Peace and Love

Post Mon Jan 16, 2006 10:01 pm

Even though the first three Pogues albums are brilliant, I think Peace and Love gets sidelined. See at the times as something as a weaker sister, to If I Should Fall From Grace With God, the Pogues were still in top form. Sure, MacGowan only wrote six of the 14 tracks, but the other members contributed quite a bit as well. Terry Wood's " Young Ned of the Hill," and Philip Chevron's "Lorelei," are classic moments of pure Poguetry. Jem Finer, the "dark horse" of the Pogues contributes the beautiful "Misty Morning, Albert Bridge, while MacGowan's originals especially "White City'" and "Boat Train," are classics.

Remember, this album had to follow If I Should Fall.... so that's why critics had mixed feelings about the album, imagine if Hell's Ditch (which is still a wonderful record) had followed their third album, it would have got the same reaction. The first three albums are the Pogues doing what they did best, which was playing kick ass Irish rock. However, Peace and Love and even Hell's Ditch, while they can't match the sheer brilliance of the first three albums, are still very good albums.

Anyway, to make a long story short, my vote is for Peace and Love, for the most underrated Pogues album.

I should have asked this sooner... but what exactly qualifies a song to be underrated? What's the criteria? In My Opinion none of thier work is "underrated" but I'm not sure how it would be measured...

I've always wanted to see someone slip that in on the dance floor. Always wondered how it would go over. The remix version anyway.

IMO, underrated are songs which noone elver mentions (as their favorites).

Also IMO, it's many of the b-sides, which not everyone has been privy to, which are the true underrated songs, and it starts with the album-track selection process...which fit and which don't.

It's the b-sides IMO from each album through the years which really tie everything together. On some b-sides for P&L, Hell's Ditch etc you can still get a feel for the older Pogues albums, but don't necessarily fit with the feel of that particular album.

So my bid for most underrated song(s) are all the b-sides.

Curse of Love
Bastard Landlord
Parting Glass (brilliantly performed!, but the rerelease version seems to be lacking something that the riginal b-side has)
Limmerick Rake
Paris St. Germain
Train Kept Rolling
First Day of Forever (I couldn't believe these three when I first heard them, just amazing, these songs...say what you will about the WFH album [I personally like it], these b-sides clearly show that the Pogues we all love still had it in them in the early 90s)

These and all the other b-sides I dodn't mention are some of my all time favorites and I think they're just fucking brilliantly.

But my personal vote for all-time underrated song(s, there's two of them) are Miss Otis Regrets (the video too is awesome!) and London You're A Lady. The words to London You're a Lady are pure poetry and although Shane is brilliant anyway, this song simply tops it off and is one of the main reasons I play P&L at all (besides for Terry's vocals on that album).
