Ah, so the selection would be tracking down a version of that instrumental. Which possibly has a different name.

Turns out there's all kinds of interesting stuff buried in these here fora: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9978&p=158078&hilit=nicaragua#p158078

(I find the tune similar to the vocal tune used in Seanchai's Mise Eire ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvvXIXHnnHM ) too and, man, I do not like this Seinchai song. Just ... man. Makes me feel like UB40 has a whole lotta soul.)

Thanks. Yes, I think Nicaragua Libre is going to be tricky to track down.

I've got some question marks in the list

25. Jesse James – Woody Guthrie?
34. Maidrin Rua – Mary O’Hara?
45. Star of the County Down – Wolfe Tones?

And these 3 still to find out more about:

Kerry Poika
Lillibulero
The hen and the cock are in Carrickmacross

Getting there gradually!

Another strange one - if you Google "The Hen and The Cock are in Carrickmacross", you only get references to the boxset and no other versions. It makes me wonder whether this title is some sort of in-joke. Gary Owen seems like a better lead as that at least seems to have been done by several other likely acts.

Google just reminded that Zuzana pulled some info together on this a while back: http://www.dzm.com/~zuzana/pogues-borrowedmusic.html

That's for that link. It seems to focus more on Pogues originals than covers, but good to see.

I tweeted Spider and James about Nicaragua Libre, Star of the County Down and Limerick Rake but no joy.

Thanks. Interesting stuff. Any idea which version the Pogues might have worked from? Seems that James Galway and the Chieftains did a version in 1986 but not sure about before this.

White City.....the tune is definitely The Curragh of Kildare, speeded up a bit.The instrumental at the end of Turkish Song of the Damned...is another 'trad arr'.....Fairports,Moving Hearts, Swarbrick and Carthy and countless others all recorded versions back in the day.
