Dirty Old Town: The Pogues’ ‘BBC Sessions’ RSD Release To Be Expanded On CD
SEPTEMBER 14, 2020 BY MIKE DUQUETTE LEAVE A COMMENT

Rhino is expanding one of their recent Record Store Day “drop” vinyl sets for CD: a collection of BBC performances by Celtic-punk group The Pogues.

The BBC Sessions 1984-86 features six sets recorded over three years by the raucous ensemble, including a 1984 set for John Peel’s radio program when they were still going by the full name of Pogue Mahone (a rough approximation of the Gaelic phrase for “kiss my ass”). Two Peel sets, one each for David “Kid” Jensen and Phil Kennedy (released for the first time anywhere), and two for Janice Long (the latter, from 1986, debuting on this disc and extending the span of time from the RSD vinyl) make up the collection, capturing the band’s sound as heard on their first three albums: 1984’s Red Roses For Me, 1985’s Elvis Costello-produced Rum, Sodomy & The Lash, and 1986’s If I Should Fall From Grace With God.

A small handful of the songs were not recorded for other albums, like the immortal Irish tune “Danny Boy”; 10 of the album’s 23 tracks were previously collected on a career-spanning box set released by the label in 2008.

The band’s performance of “Sally MacLennane” from their latter Peel set at the end of 1984 is streaming now, and the full collection will be available on CD and digitally October 30. Pre-order your copy at the links below!

Nice! So I won't need to break the cellophane on the vinyl I've just received to rip the tracks.

And of course, when pre-ordering on Amazon, we will all remember to use these helpful links to support The Raft ;)

DzM wrote:Hi!

This is a subject a little awkward to bring up. It's like talking about religion or politics, only it makes me a bit more squeamish. What is it? Moneys!

While this site has been (and always will be) free for you to use, it's not free for me to run. My various expenses, not counting my time itself, are more than my monthly cable or telephone bills. I've tried various things as fund raisers with various levels of success (the t-shirts from 2006 paid for about four months of expenses - Thank You!), but ultimately scrapped those ideas as being too much of an administrative problem.

So here's what I'm doing now: Affiliate Programs! Yay! When you buy the thiongs you want to buy anyway, but you do it through the links on this site, then a portion of the proceeds (I assume this comes from the store's profit margins, not the band's) is used to help cover expenses here.

How do you find these links? Great question! You'll slowly see them showing up on various pages that seem to warrant them (e.g. a lyrics page being pointed to a place to buy the album), but there's ALSO a shopping/filthy lucre page now:

http://www.pogues.com/shopping.html

You can also go directly to the music section of the various Amazon geographic outlets here:

  • Germany
  • France
  • Japan
  • UK
  • Canada
  • USA

Those in the USA (US issued credit card, and a US based mail address) cans also buy a surprisingly large number of Pogues (and others) tracks in MP3 format. Prices are comparable with iTunes ($.99/song, $9.99/album), the tracks are encoded at 256k variable bit rate (read: "High Quality Encoding"), and the tracks are all in non-DRM-encumbered MP3 format. That's really fricken cool, and I'd encourage you to buy from these instead of iTunes based on that alone. The kick-back is much higher on these too, so if you just want the tracks and don't care about a physical artifact, buy these:

Amazon MP3

I really dislike sites that have PayPal links all over them saying "Please donate," and I loathe sites with advertising all over them. I'm hoping that this ends up being a good compromise between Pay-For-Everything-Myself and Deriving-Benefit-From-Purchases-Already-Taking-Place without turning into Tacky-As-Hell.

Thanks for your cooperation, and thanks for your support!

You're the best, buddy. I'll get your kickback check in the mail ASAP. :)

I should probably check to make sure those links all still do the right thing.

For all of your pre-ordering convenience, here are links that take you straight to the pages AND get me a few pennies if you make a purchase (note that these links will get me a few percentage of ANY purchase you make from that particular regional Amazon shop for the next 24 hours, so you should definitely use this 24 hour window to buy that Picaso you've been putting off for a while).

Mine arrived today too. I had some tracks on the odd boot, but it's been very nice hearing them all together. Certainly a fine tonic for a dreary Friday 13th.

Great CD, takes me right back to the early days. If only we had a bit of live Poguetry to give us all a lift in these grey days.

Finally explains the mystery of where Sally Mac on "21 Years of Alternative Radio 1" came from as well - the Phil Kennedy session.

Audience member: "Stop fucking doing it then!"

Mine arrived today! Now I just need to get it on the iPod in time to go to work. Hm, it's a bit big, how do i shrink it down - the microwave?

Does anyone think these 2 tracks were just the original releases being played on The Phil Kennedy Show? They sound very similar to the original releases?
