1,001 SONGS you must hear before you die

I recently bought this book as a gift for a non-Pogues fan but, naturally, turned to see what's listed under the band. Just a couple: FoNY (unsurprisingly) and Sally Mac.

The Wild Rover's also included, and I never knew this, under The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem (1965), though it's thought to be a 19th century sea shanty. The Pogues/Dubliners cover gets a mention.

A lengthy index lists "10,001 Songs You Must Hear..." with a Pair of Brown Eyes, Dark Streets and Yeah, Yeah....making an appearance. Can't say the last two would even make my shortlist but each to their own.

"Dark Streets..." was a hell of a debut, and it must've been a mind-blowing sensation to those in the know when it arrived. So it's notable for sure, but if I was to pick the "best" or "most important" 4 or 6 songs from The Pogues' catalogue, i would have to agree that it (and "Yeah Yeah Yeah...") would not make that list.

These lists of stuff to do before you die make me laugh..cos obviously you have to do them before you die..you can't do them after can you?
