We didn't get too fancy with food, this year - just deserts. I make the old family recipe yule log, which involves rolling up a cake, and a tricky candied coffee cream filling. It's touch and go every year on this but i do it because i want to eat it for the rest of my life, but don't want to have to visit my family! The good news is i have my daughter, who intends to be a baker, pretty well trained on the recipe now, so soon i should be free. She made cute little mushroom meringues to go with each slice too, and the whole affair drizzled in sticky chocolate sauce with a touch of whisky.

Ours did not look as stunning as this picture, but it gives you the idea of the sort of thing we were after.
Tonight we're having cheese fondue & home made truffles & more meringues, drinking my xmas scotch, and watching "Johnathan Strange & Mr. Norrell", or as many episodes as we get through before midnight.
While it was no 2016, 2018 wasn't so great itself, so here's to a better 2019 - happy Solstice, merry Xmas, and a Happy New Year to you all!
