I wonder, Philip, was the band taping the shows in 1986?

The Canadian show listed is actually Glastonbury 86

All Pogues shows were soundboard recorded from 1985 onwards but have never seen the light of day! What a fuckin waste of taping ;-)

Hopefully before they were erased the guy kept one for himself ;-)

It's interesting to know that the Pogues would have recorded most of their shows in '86, as lately the more gigs I go to, the more I notice the sound man has something plugged into the board...

Terri: Although the Quebec '86 show is not listed on the pogueslive.com website, I have seen various traders on the internet list a show as "Canada '86," which I presume would be the Pogues only performance in Canada in '86....Having written that, I think its legitmacy is probably questionable due to the fact that noyone is really sure if it is the Quebec City Summer Fest show or not....

Anywho, it's still great to picture the band in '86 playing such a festival.

Hi any old thread visitors! I was working at the L'Ombre Jaune in the Summer of '86, having done French Immersion in Quebec City from January of that year. I'm just about to go back to Quebec City for a few days next week and was checking out the Grande Allee to see what was in the old L'Ombre spot and whether I could show it to my 11 year old (yep, I had her late). I worked on the patio during the day, serving pretty bad food to unsuspecting tourists who couldn't get a spot in a the busy restaurants around the corner on the real street. Just as well Trip Advisor didn't exist back then! I think I worked the night the Pogues were there because it was busy because of the Festival? No real memory really. I did serve beer to the Pogues on the l'Ombre Jaune patio, I remember that much. And I knew who they were because of some punkish friends and relations and a trip to Ireland the previous summer.

Thanks for chiming in Patrick! Just stumbled back on this thread from days gone by. Where exactly was L'ombre Jaune located? In Vieux-Quebec?

I saw this outdoor show. Chairs were aligned for us to sit but everyone started to jump and dance. All chairs have been put on the side. Some people were upset. The next day in the newspapers they were talking about it. Shane McGowan was drinking a cheap wine in a blue bottle during all concert. After the show, the band stayed in Quebec for few days. At night, they were hanging at the bar "L'Ombre Jaune". A couple of days later, I saw an homeless guy with a "The Pogues" t-shirt. I'm pretty sure it was a gift from the band.

I attended the Pogues concert in Quebec in July of '86. I had taken a train from Nova Scotia with a friend to visit my sister. Unlike many Quebecers at the concert I actually knew who they were. It was a blast. Everyone was jumping up and down and yes I do remember Shane with a bottle in his hand during the entire concert. It was so much fun.

Wow. thank you, Dave a/k/a Gir0019, for confirming the show, and for the story. You must have been trolling through a lot of old threads to find this one :!:

welcome to the Pogues Forum, by the way. :D

I don't know if this too late to repond to, but I can confirm there was a show in Quebec City in July 1986. I was visiting the city with may girlfrend and one Saturday aftenoon, we were walking by a park when we heard some music. We sat down in this circular like cement seating area and watched a band doing a soundcheck. At the end, they said to teh 6 or so of us watching something along the lines of "Thank you, we're the Pogues. We'd never heard of them and since my girlfriend was Irish she wanted to go.

So there were only about 200 of us there that night. The thing the struck me the most was that Shane had a bottle in his hand throughout the show and could barely sing or stand by the end of the show.

The next day as we walked out on the street in front of our hotel, they walked right by us. (minus Shane who was no doubt nursing a hangover)

Soundboard recordings are usually intrinsically limited in range. Some elements will necessarily be louder than usual, as the atmospheric sound will carry some instruments to the audience's ear more readily than others. It is not unusual to hear off-the-desk tapes that heavily favour vocals and drums or are low in bass guitar (the ambient sound in the hall ordinarily demands that the bass is "felt" as much as heard.

Anyway, Kufen is the man to ask about most of this stuff really.

That's interesting! The bootleg people will be .

So there's a live archive from 1985 onwards ... ten years of shows, potentially hundreds of concerts in perfect sound quality.

Surely another boxset???????????? After the studio recordings box, the cream of the Pogues Live, one or two judiously picked concerts from every year, the evolution of the band, the songs, the audiences . :) :P
