For my son's senior year in high school they were given an assignment in their Economics class to develop a business that would net them a certain amount of $ by a certain day. They had to write a basic business plan and execute it. My son decided to write, record and sell a 4 song CD. He wrote all music and lyrics, enlisted a friend with proper equipment to record and mix, designed the cover and wrote the notes inside, etc., etc... we then got them made and put in cases (I was the cheap labor folding and stuffing), set a price point ($5.00/ea) and he calculated how many sales it would take to turn a profit. The enlightenment that it takes money to make money was priceless. He will finish University soon with a degree in music focusing on production and recording. That's not to say he isn't still fronting 2 bands and playing bass in 2 others, it is just that if the whole rock-star thing falls through he can get a good job in the field he loves
