Absolutely. And I think Mr Earle's performance of it is way superior to Mundy's, to be honest.

I have a photo of them doing the song together at Cambridge Folk Festival, when Mundy started the song and then unexpectedly Mr Earle bounded on from the side of the stage (he was going to be performing later that day) and sort of "took over" the mic. Great performance it was. I was going to post the pic, but just looked at it again and actually it's not very good, so I won't inflict it on Medusa. I wasn't drunk at the time, honest, I was just taken by surprise by Mr Earle's appearance, and sort of off-balance. :wink:

Sorry for duplicating this info, i had not sen it posted previously, but anyways, its ok to read it twice....LOL.

I also feel that Steve Earle just does a bit more magic to this song as well, not to take anything away from Dave Monday as i think he is also great playing with Sharon??

Now if only we could see Steve guest on stage with The Pogues once again to perform "Johnny Come Lately", it would surely be a most fantastic site to behold??.....................IMHO of course??......... :D

Gawd the demands us mere mortal Medusans place on this band??............................... :roll:

Sharon Shannon, life time achievement award.

Post by Irishrose Thu Jan 29, 2009 1:25 pm

Singer Sharon is honoured with a lifetime accolade.

http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/arou ... 19135.html

Thursday January 29 2009

After the heartbreak following the sad passing of her boyfriend last year, there's some good news for acclaimed musician Sharon Shannon, with a new achievement award.

There was shock in showbiz circles last May when her long-term partner Leo Healy, with whom she shared a house in Salthill, passed away in his sleep at the tragically young age of 46.

But the renowned accordionist, who collaborated with Mundy on last year's smash hit single Galway Girl, got some positive news for 2009 after it was revealed she's being given the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Meteors.

No stranger to mixing in high circles, Sharon has collaborated with big names such as Bono, Adam Clayton, Sinead O'Connor and Willie Nelson in a career that has spanned more than 22 years.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get the award, it came as a great surprise to me -- especially as I'm still so young," she laughed.

"It's such a big honour to get something like this but I suppose I would put it down to doing so much hard work for so long. I've been doing this since I was 12 years old and that's a long time."

And she has also been busy in the studio compiling material for her new album Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which sees her joining forces with Irish stars like Camille O'Sullivan and Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan.

Interesting to note that Steve Earle was not mentioned, as seeing he wrote Galway Girl and also collaborated with her on this song, and it is a most excellent version IMHO, as can be seen at this video on youtube??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7-PM_4aeE4

and also this version with Dave Mundy;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MdgBNj- ... re=related

and again from Dave Mundy, in gaelic;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDfrYmUTJ_o&NR=1

this song, for those who do not know was originally written by Steve Earle and can be found on his "Transcendental Blues" album.

There is something about this song when Steve Earle plays it with Sharon Shannon, one only needs to look into the eyes and actions of all those surrounding Steve in the first video, you can see it in Sharons eyes and i just love how the drummer is just having a blast playing this song, all on stage are having a very good and special time with it and their actions just add to the quality and the uplifting spirit that this song conveys. I was able to pick up "The Galway Girl" cd when i was in Dublin last summer and it has Steve and Dave doing their versions, just an absolutely brilliant song and album??

It is a true testament to the spirit of Irish music IMHO, it just wants to make you kick up your feet and sing and dance??

Now as to why this is being posted here, well simply the fact that Shane Macgowan is collaborating with Sharon and co, on a new album.

Hope you all enjoy??

Much as I love Ms Shannon, I have to say I find it slightly dispiriting that someone considerably younger than me is getting a lifetime achievement award...

Musician Sharon Shannon is to be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement gong at the Meteor Music Awards, set to take place on St Patrick's Day in Dublin.

Shannon, the youngest ever winner, has earned the tribute for her outstanding contribution to the Irish music industry over the past 22 years.

From Clare, she has been nicknamed the 'Queen of the Squeezebox' after bringing the accordion into the mainstream.

Shannon has recorded and toured with music greats including Bono, Sinead O’Connor, Steve Earle, Mark Knopfler, The Chieftains and Shane MacGowan.

The awards, presented by Amanda Byram, take place March 17 at the RDS where Shannon will perform her number one hit 'Galway Girl', the song recorded with Mundy which has spent the last three months in the top five.

AC/DC, Coldplay, Elbow, The Killers and Kings of Leon are all up for Best International Band, while Boyzone, The Blizzards, The Coronas, The Script and Westlife are the nominees for Best Irish Pop Act.
