Was thinking some more about this last night as we're planning a school reunion at the moment. Bands we (me and my two other mates who were obsessed with the Pogues as 15/16 year olds in 1986) liked at the same time were:

Waterboys
Men They Couldn't Hang
Go Betweens
Long Ryders
Lone Justice
REM (early)
Billy Bragg
Trojans

Of course the Pogues were ALWAYS top of the list, especially for those few years. I think the beginning of the end for me was the Reading Festival in 1989 when I actually left the arena. I saw them three times in 1988 and they were awesome every time. But by 1989 things had changed ... it took three or four years for them to rise again for me and they have been with me ever since.

Flogging Molly ... of course

Post by Markjh1970 Thu Sep 22, 2005 11:17 am

Maybe missed them but the Flogging Molly albums are fucking great and they're touring this November. I'll be at the London show in my 1988 Pogues tour shirt and intend to be in the thcik of it. Gla dto see The Men They Couldn't Hang get a mention as well; often forgotten but they made some fine records. And let us not forget Gaz Mayall and his Trojans with their mighty Gelic Ska Beats; skanksville!

I don't know a whole lotta songs by the mahones but I don't see what's so special about them...they just seem like another pogues rip off band, not to say they don't to it well though. I mean c'mon the guys voice is just a shane imitation. oh and I don't think anyone's mentioned them yet so the Men They Couldn't Hang!!

Hey it's good to see the Real Mckenzies get a mention, thats what I listen to when I occasionaly get bored with The Pogues and Flogging Mollys.

I think the bagpipe is a very cool instrument and the Real Mckenzies put in a intresting mix of bagpipe music in their songs, their bagpipe player is a hell of a lot better than Spicy McHaggis who I believe is the bagpiper in the Dropkick Murphys.

I think it's a crying shame Barney left Blood Or Whiskey. The new album just ain't thesame without him.

In no order.

The Dolomites are so good, even Shane MacGowan thought they were the Pogues. He asked "Is this me?"

Roaring Jack
The Mahones
Siobhan
Saint Bushmill's Choir
The Go Set
Blood Or Whiskey
The Skels
Real McKenzies
Amadan
The Peelers
Greenland Whalefishers

I'm forgetting many, but it's 8 AM

If you enjoy the bagpipes in DKM you should check out the Real McKenzies. I'd recommand 'Clash of the Tartans'.

Roaring Jack is a band I've heard about several times, but am having a hell of a time finding anything by. Any tips?

some german label has it and shite 'n onions does sometimes. i'm pretty sure those are the only places you can get it. go to roaring jack's site and it has the links.

or i could give you their stuff through msn messenger if you'd like.
