I saw PAUL McGUINNESS stand in for Philip at The Heineken Festival in Nottingham in JULY 1993 and again at the Dranouter Folk Festival in Belgium the following month,i know i mentioned this in a previous forum, that it was one of the strangest Pogues gigs ever.Amazing that the band are playing there again,i have been to Dranouter four times, the last being in 1996,how i would love to go there once again.

PRECISE DETAIL

Post by FAY Fri Feb 08, 2008 1:04 am

Well, I'm glad I brought this topic up - despite the hazy recollections of both the band members and voeyers alike. Yet, I believe this raises an even bigger question....

Whether one views the Pogues as a "cult," or (as I do), cultural/historical treasure, the legacy of the Pogues deserves to be fact-checked, written, shared, preserved, archived, discussed, analyzed, probed, debated, argued, etc... in PRECISE DETAIL.

No disrespect to Sarah Share, Caroc Clerc, etc., but nobody/nothing can capture all the trivia as well as this forum/medium. Therefore... Let's get it right. Who played what/when/where?!?!?!?!?

Who's commandering this boat/(raft)?

Peace and love.

Well, according to
http://pogueslive.com/pogues/1992-96.htm
Mad Dog subbed for you on the 11 July 1993 at the Leysin Rock Festival, Leysin, Switzerland, and on a radio broadcast the same day. Just letitn' you know where the rumour started...

Ok, it's possible I guess, but it still sounds unlikely to me.

The strange thing is that there's no guitar on quite a few songs or no bass on Star Of the County Down, your backing vocals are also missing as are the songs you wrote.

I don't remember Paul depping for me at any point, unless you include the David Letterman Show appearance. They asked for Spider "and maybe the guitarist" to perform "Tuesday Morning" on the show with the house band. We had just schlepped across the USA on what would turn out to be my last tour with The Pogues (first time round) and I was in no mood to turn tail and cross the Atlantic AGAIN just for one TV appearance, however "prestigious". In fairness, neither was anybody else in the band, which has, after all, more guitarists than a Les Paul recording session, so Paul McG was sent in my place. It wasn't really fair to Spider, but then, it wasn't very smart of the Letterman people not to request ALL The Pogues in the first place, or to figure out a way to get us on the show while we were already IN the USA. And frankly, I was just exhausted. I had been running on my spare engine only for over a year. I'd had enough.
