Re: Joe Strummer Tribute Songs

I'da called you Woody, Joe-The Gaslight Anthem

I was crawling around in my head in the haze of a trance
Rico said, "I'ma turn you onto a sound, cool out your head
This is the sound from Camden town"

And then I heard it like a shot through my skull to my brain
I felt my fingertips tingle, and it started to rain
When the walls of my bedroom were trembling around me
This ramshackle voice over attack of a blues beat
Telling me, "He's only looking for fun"
And this was the sound, of the very last gang in town

As heard by my wild young heart
Like directions on a cold, dark night
Saying, "Let it out, let it out, let it out, you're doing all right"
And I heard it in his chain gang soul
It wasn't just the same sad song
Saying, "Let it out, let it out, let it out, you're doing all right"
And I'm doing all right
Are you doing all right?

And I carried these songs as a comfort wherever I'd go
They was there when my summers was high
There when she left me alone
Saying, "The soul is hard to find"

And I never got to tell him, so I just wrote it down
I wrapped a couple chords around it and I let it come out
When the walls of my bedroom were trembling around me
This ramshackle voice over attack of a blues beat
And a girl, on the excitement gang
And this was the sound, of the very last gang in town

As heard by my wild young heart
Like directions on a cold, dark night
Saying, "Let it out, let it out, let it out, you're doing all right"
And I heard it in his chain gang soul
It wasn't just the same sad song
Saying, "Let it out, let it out, let it out, you're doing all right"
And are you doing all right?
Are you doing all right?

Do you hear the sound?

Anyway, i guess it's an anti-tribute, but i remember some punk song called Joe Strummer's Wallet that dissed him 'cause, you know, he managed to make money from his music. A total crime, don't you know. You're way more legit if you let the record label steal your publishing, or if you make sure you stay so obscure nobody ever hears your music. Ok, lemme google it...

It's by a group called The Sting Rays, on their album From the Kitchen Sink. Can't find lyrics, sorry. Probably not worth the bother.

Joe Strummer's Wallet is not a punk song.
It's on the Dinosaurs album.
Listen to it again and dare tell me it's not a good song.

Been to see "The Beat " on tour twice in the last week. It is allways a pleasure to see Roger Rankin and co .But seems more so with the current big two ska bands of Madness and The Specials touring and putting ska bands back in the general publics eye. To see Mickey Billingham up close is a great honnor. But the reason Iam posting here is that the band do a version of the Clash song "Rock The Casbah " as a tribute To Joe Strummer in set , with Murphy/Ranking Jr doing some addtional vocals.Nice touch to see Joe bigged up.

There are a few clips of other shows where they do Rock The Casbah on youtube

Not a tribute song, of course, but the anticipation of Brixton dates brings "Straight to Hell" to my mind, inevitably. I just heard a short account of one young dad who was just starting on a music career in Liverpool when he was killed in Vietnam - that reminded me so much of this song.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Clash-Clash-Clash City Rockers!
Clash-Clash-Clash City Rockers!

I was a thirteen year old lookin' for answers
Dyin' in the head of a fuckin' mental cancer
Feelin' like a stranger in me old hometown
You know I felt like burnin' it fuckin' down

I was a thirteen year old with an elder brother
Didn't wanna rot, wanted to push further
His London Calling cassette in the stereo tape deck
Since that day on I never looked back

Yeah, hearin' that noise was my first ever feeling
Of waking me mind with someone friendly leadin' me
And when I saw that gig on the tellyvision
I finally took, I took me last decision

I became the bassist of a punk-rock band
Broken amps and me friends, rebel songs we sang
I became addicted to combat rock
I knew that day I would never stop
I give my music body, heart and soul
For that's the only way to play rock'n'roll
Listening to Tommy Gun, Stay Free and Koka Kola
I thank you for waking me up out of a coma

Out of a coma (Out of a coma) Out of a coma Out of a coma (Out of a coma)
Out of a coma (Out of a coma) Out of a coma Out of a coma (Out of a coma)

And when I heard you shouting White Riot
I knew that was a riot of my own
I knew that was a riot of my own
I KNOW THIS IS A RIOT OF MY OWN!

Out of a coma (Out of a coma) Out of a coma Out of a coma (Out of a coma)

knowing this thread is out-dated, im trying to put myself together a mix of strummer tribute songs... two newer ones if any of you are interested...

The General's BoomBox by the Street Dogs

You were the razor edge poet
From a punk lost generation
Shaking off praise, so humble man
Shattering expectation
You're relevant right now
More so than you were yesterday

Seventy seven broke
Your voice came charging through
Was that changing of the guard
Bearer of the new flame
Begging what's my name
Who's to blame
We're under complete control
You taught us all when we were young
To be true to ourselves

You lit the fire in us
And we play on in your trust
A reluctant, poetic guttersnipe
Beyond images and songs
More than your memory carries on
As the general's boombox still plays on
As the general's boombox still plays on

You evolve with each new year
You always push for change
When you got called out
You stood your ground and kept it tight
Let the ragga drop
Act like a cop
When Bernie got in your head
You sacked St. Mick
Went on a walkabout and stayed true to yourself

You lit the fire in us
And we play on in your trust
A reluctant, poetic guttersnipe
Beyond images and songs
More than your memory carries on
As the general's boombox still plays on
As the general's boombox still plays on

I remember the cold December day
When I got the news
I will never forget, I will never forget

Found some guitars
Broke up bars
Chapter 11
Detroit Stars

You boot it, you boot it, you boot to full

Can hear that angry spirit
In garages around the world
From amplifiers, barrel fires, everywhere
They sing it on, won't forget
You're living on

You lit the fire in us
And we play on in your trust
We'll try to carry on the flame
Do you right boyo
And if you listen close enough
You can hear him in our songs

As the general's boombox still plays on
As the general's boombox still plays on

and.....

I'da Called you Woody, Joe by The Gaslight Anthem

I was crawling around in my head in the haze of a trance.
Rico said, "I'ma turn you onto a sound, cool out your head.
This is the sound from Camden town."

And then I heard it like a shot through my skull to my brain,
I felt my fingertips tingle and it started to rain,
When the walls of my bedroom were tremblin' around me,
This ramshackle voice over attack of a bluesbeat,
Tellin' me he's only looking for fun.
This was the sound of the very last gang in town.

As heard by my wild young heart, like directions on a cold dark night,
Sayin', 'Let it out... You're doin' all right.'
And I heard it in his chain gang soul.
It wasn't just the same sad song.
Saying, 'Let it out, you're doing all right.'
And I'm doing all right, are you doin' all right?

And I carried these songs like a comfort wherever I'd go.
They was there when my summers was high, there when she left me alone.
Saying... 'The soul is hard to find.'

And I never got to tell him so I just wrote it down,

And a girl, on the excitement gang.
