Concert tribute for Kirsty MacColl

The 10th anniversary of Kirsty MacColl's death was commemorated with a star-studded concert by her showbiz friends and collaborators.

Devoted fans packed out Shepherd's Bush Empire on what would have been the singer's 51st birthday to hear versions of her best-loved songs performed by artists including Billy Bragg, Alison Moyet, Kim Wilde, Andrea Corr, Ellie Goulding and actress Catherine Tate.

MacColl died in December 2000 when she was struck by a motor cruiser after surfacing from a scuba dive with her sons Jamie and Louis at the Mexican coral island of Cozumel, off the Yucatan peninsula.

Her mother Jean told the audience she would fight on to expose the "corruption and deceit" surrounding the subsequent inquiry into the death despite a long-running fundraising campaign being wound up last year.

Profits from the event will go to The Music Fund for Cuba, which was established in 2001 in memory of the singer, whose last album was inspired by the Caribbean island and aims to nurture young artistic talent by providing support and much-needed equipment.

Many of the fans arrived at the event directly from their annual pilgrimage to London's Soho Square, where a bench carries a plaque remembering MacColl, but they were disappointed by one no-show:

Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan had been due to sing perennial Christmas favourite A Fairytale of New York with Scottish singer-songwriter Amy Macdonald but pulled out due to "ill health".

Was an amazing night for an amazing person. So glad I got to witness it. With or without Shane. Alison Moyet blew me away. As did Jean MacColl. Fantastic. :)

Should be picking up a ticket for that one.

Wish Catherine Tate wasn't on the line-up.

This looks really good, unfortunately I may be on holiday as I have two weeks booked off work then. Planning on Thailand (again), obviously all depends on what the situation is out there then.

Hmm, not sure, do I book the concert, or wait and see what happens in Thailand?

Friends of the late Kirsty MacColl are organising a special memorial concert to raise funds for her charity The Music Fund For Cuba.

The O2 Shepherds Bush Empire in London has been booked for MacColl’s birthday, October 10, where friends and musicians will perform to celebrate the memory of Kirsty, who died in tragic circumstances when she was hit by a speedboat while swimming in Mexico 10 years ago.

The 10/10/10 shows will feature artists including Alison Moyet, Andrea Corr, Amy Macdonald, Billy Bragg, Catherine Tate, David Gray, Eddi Reader, Ellie Goulding, James Walsh, Jackie Clune, Kim Wilde, Phill Jupitus, Omar Puente and Shane MacGowan.

All profits will be donated to MacColl's own charity, The Music Fund for Cuba which provides much needed support to young musicians and dancers who may otherwise be denied.

“Kirsty was such a good friend who had amazing stage fright, even though she was a great performer on stage and in the studio,” recalls Billy Bragg. “I hope the amazing line up at the concert can do Kirsty justice. Nothing can right the cruelty and injustice of her death and nothing can bring her back, but we will make sure that her birthday concert night will honour her and celebrate her.”

Thanks for posting the info, Walshy! The gig surely deserves some thorough promotion on this site.

(And it also reminded me to finally upload the pic of Kirsty's memorial bench to the Medusa gallery. More thanks!) ;)
