Minor correction, Terry on a STOOL (be NICE children), PLAYING a 12-string etc... Now Archbishop Makarios, if ye'd just take it from the top, and this time try and leave out the ..."..of fish", OK?

Home Fires

Post by Behan Thu Mar 02, 2006 8:24 pm

Hey Territa,
There's an interesting story about the Home Fires CD. I got that CD around 1994, if I remember correctly. My favourite piece was Tom's Tavern (Fermoy Regatta/Tom's Tavern). I learned to play it on cittern as Terry played on the CD. I later started to go to a weekly seisiun at a local pub where I lived. A few of the musicians there were button accordion player Mary Rafferty and her dad Mike Rafferty on uilleann pipes. They are pretty well known among the Irish Ceili communities in the north/east region of the USA.
Here's their link: http://www.raffertymusic.com/.
I used to always play Tom's Tavern and Mary would learn it from me. Every week when I walk into the pub, Mary would say "get out your cittern (bouzouki) and play Tom's tavern with me". Everyone loved that one. A year later she joined "Cherish The Ladies" then she phoned me to ask me what the name of that piece was. Cherish the Ladies were to record that one and tie it into a polka set. It later showed up on their 1996 CD - NEW DAY DAWNING. They played Tom's Tavern at the end of "Green Cottage Polkas" as indicated inside the CD insert.

The funny thing was, Mary told me later that when they toured Scotland, they performed that piece at a pub and a man came up to them and asked how they learned that one and was happy to hear them play it. It was Ron Kavana.

SMALL WORLD!

Well worth owning if you don't have it already, especially if you're a T. Woods fan.
Behan, I absolutely agree. This album is one of the best I've found in the last few years. I found mine on eBay.

Terry and Ron

Have you heard Terry Woods with Ron Kavana in Ron's CD "Home Fires"?

This CD has an alternate version of "Young Ned Of The Hill" after all, Terry and Ron both wrote that song. Ron Kavana did all the singing but Terry did back vocals. There's a lot of cittern and concertina playin'. They also did an interesting tune called "The Barleycorn" which jumps into a couple of very fast Kerry polkas with Kevin Rowsome playing uilleann pipes, spiked with a flanger effect. There's a lot of Terry Woods influence on this CD. Well worth owning if you don't have it already, especially if you're a T. Woods fan.

Terry's BIG BIG influence on the Pogues

I'm very surprised at the small amount of posts in Terry's forum. He is and was a big part of the genius behind the Pogues, when he joined. More than vocals and lyrics (as most people know him), there is music, music, music.

I personally think he had an extreme amount of influence on the Pogues and "If I Should Fall from Grace with God." I think the cross over from Rum Sodomy to If I Should... came from the man, Mr. Woods

The pioneer of concertina in experimental rock music, cittern and bouzouki player genius, mandolin, guitar, etc.

Everytime I hear Steeleye Span's "Dark Eyed Sailor" and hear Terry's concertina playing I get chills
