I attended that Pogues gig in Hamburg ,November 1989,at the Sporthalle. It was a great show, the last of a week long German tour, which began in Hannover,i saw all of the shows and there was 2 more that i attended in Amsterdam and Deinze near Ghent.I do remember as soon as the Pogues came on stage,Spider stepped up to the mic and chanted ''Ole,ole.ole, ole,Super Hamburg St Pauli!'' the audience response was.....deafening.Sadly,that was the last time that line up,which was minus Terry Woods, played Hamburg,it seemed that a minority of fans, smashed up the toilets, and there were a few 'skirmishes' which resulted in The Pogues receiving an indefinite ban from playing in Hamburg. The ban was eventually lifted and in September 1993 they performed two nights at the famous Grosse Freiheit in the Reeperbahn, where they last played in 1988.The Poguesdidn't take the stage till after midnight, this gave me the opportunity to watch St.Pauli play,it was an awful game a 0-0 bore....at least The Pogues with Spider on lead vocals did managed to step up to the plate!

I have similar memory problem with the Pogues. I have a memory of the week of my 21st birthday (December 1991) going to see the Pogues at Royal Court in Liverpool. I spent the afternoon in a pub called Flannagans and shortly before the gig I remember (well I have a memory) that somebody came in and said that Shane hadn’t turned up. When I got to the gig it turned out to not be true and Shane put in a great performance. However by December 1991 Shane had left and Joe Strummer was up front? I definitely did see Joe Strummer with the Pogues but could swear it was a different time but I presume I must be getting my memories mixed up. To confuse things more my friend who was with me can’t remember anything apart from the fact that he is adamant he has never seen Joe Strummer with the pogues. Figure that out ha ha

The show I attended had a nearly sober and disappointingly serious Shane on vocals, Joe only sang a couple of songs. Could be, he played guitar through the whole set, don't remember really.

What I can remember best from the show – apart from the not too lively performance and the bad sound – was the fantastic atmosphere and the leaving audience singing "Dirty Old Town" for at least half an hour on their way to the subway station (and in the subway, too).

Hmmmm ... maybe the show I'm thinking of was in 1987 or 1988? From the setlist I remember DOT, Fiesta and Irish Rover. Yes, I can't really remember "Peace and Love" songs now.

No German fans here with a better memory than mine?

I was also there. Joe Strummer was on stage, I was so glad to witness that...
But Shane wasn't sober at all that evening. In the end he tried to get off the stage on the wrong side.
The show was one hell of a gig!

I saw the Pogues in Hannover in 1989, 1990 and 1991 but the only show that included Joe Strummer was the "Psst ... here´s the tour" in 1991. Of course that was when he had already replaced Shane as the lead singer. I don´t think Joe stood in for Shane in any of the German shows from 1989 to 1991, but having seen only the Hannover gigs I´m not sure by 100 %.

Thanks, yes, I've looked there, a great site indeed. But unfortunately there's only a show in Hamburg mentioned from 1989, where Tracey Shiels from Sons of the Desert sang a song. But I can't remember that fact, while I'm not REALLY sure. The Pogues always came with alcohol, you know ...

And there's that reminiscence of Joe Strummer, I'm 90% sure, that he was there! So I guess it was in 1990. But did they play in Hamburg at all that year?

Pogues + Shane + Joe Strummer in Hamburg, Germany 1989/90?

Post by Nummer2 Wed Mar 21, 2007 9:35 am

Hi everybody, this is my first post here.

I'm a Pogues fan since the beginning. But I only managed to see them live once, and that was in 1989 or 1990 in Hamburg. As far as I remember, at one point Joe Strummer entered the stage and performed a couple of his own songs. Shane was still with the band and he was rather sober that evening.

Does anybody know more about this show? My memory is a bit blurred meanwhile and I couldn't find any confirmation about Joe's appearance and the exact date on the internet. As far as I remember the setlist contained songs from Hell's Ditch – but I'm not 100% sure. I would be very happy if somebody could refresh my memory!

Thanks,
