I started going to pogues gigs in 2001 and have been to at least one show a year.

I can say without doubt the best was the Oxegen festival in 2008. Now, one important point to note was that they were playing in a big tent rather than an outdoor stage.

I think festival gigs for any band in general are not as good. This is mainly due to artificial stages being set up to accommodate large crowds rather than sound quality. This is fair enough as a lot of people will want to see a lot of bands. The only exception I've had to this rule was when I saw RHCP, Foo Fighters and QOSTA play Slane Castle a few years back. The grounds at Slane are shaped to allow a natural amphitheatre which is really just a good coincidence

At oxegen it was an overpacked tent and the sound was amazing and the atmosphere even better.

Nope, it's just you. :P Having seen The Pogues inside and outside in the past week, each performance had different merits, but were both great. :D I think they should get out more.

Is it just me or do the band rarely sound good at festivals, where all the intricacy and intimacy gets lost in the ether.

i know they're different but bands like The Pogues and Specials (blinding at Brixton, lame at glasto) should leave festivals to Oasis and Kings of Leon.

No?
