Just came accross the above page/link that has a number of Pogues,Radiators and other bands that may be of interest to some on the raft. Phillip your ears must be burning as they quote you [from this very thread in one case ] a good few times . All good.

The Mighty Clouds of Dust record was released on Dead On Records, the label run by former Nips co-manager Phil Gaston (who wrote "Navigator" on Rum, Sodomy) and Deirdre O'Mahony in 1983. It was basically Phil fulfilling a childhood dream of making a cowboy record. He was BIG DUSTY, the lead vocalist and co-produced the record with me. I was in fact Phil and Dee's lodger in Camberwell for most of the Eighties.

I was also, yes, JOHNNY JUKEBOX. Ben Mandelson (WILD SLIM MUSTAPHA) was with 3 Mustaphas 3 and Orchestra Jazira and has recently been part of Billy Bragg's band. Chopper (CHOPPER) was with the Mustaphas too and, lately, the Oyster Band. HANK RAVEN was and is Charles O'Connor from Horslips and PADDY "GUITAR" PADDY was Jimmy Crashe, former drummer with the Radiators.

The record contained the songs FLOWERS ON THE WALL, PLEASE MR CUSTER and CHAMPION THE WONDER HORSE. It became a bit of a cult item among the FOLK NEWS people, who reissued it as a 12" single in, I think, 1989.

(I was astonished to see this 12" as a stage prop in the Donmar Warehouse revival of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing a few years back. It appeared in a scene in which Stephen Dillane as the Stoppardesque playwright is rummaging through his record collection so he can compile his list of favourite records for the iconic BBC Radio 4 programme Desert Island Discs!! The production moved into the West End and onto Broadway, but I don't know whether the Mighty Clouds Of Dust took the journey too. )

There were no further MCOD recordings.

Just saw a tv ad for a Frankie Lanie cd which made me think of the above record.

Cd's, Vinyl and Music Memorabilia Rarities from around the World ] is selling it for £33.80.

Mustaphas do appear on the track "Hafen Kneipe" on the late Agnes Bernelle's Father's Lying Dead On The Ironing Board album, which I produced in 1985 and which is among the all time favourites of both Tom Waits and Elvis Costello. Collectors of the exquisite or, at least, the exotic, may remember Agnes and Mustaphas performing the song together on Terry Wogan's BBC TV show in the Spring of 1985.

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but I couldn't resist. Any other leads on tracking down old 3M3 recordings and what the guys are doing today? General web research has been less than fruitful.

I'm not really the one to ask. I had dinner with Ben last year and he gave me a then new Mustapahas promo CD but I'm not up to date. I'm sure Ben himself would be happy to give you any info he can. Try contacting him at Ace Records, where he runs the Globestyle label.

You should have done some more tracks as Champion The Wonder Horse is great.Background info. was great to hear..I have the 7" but will have to keep a look out for the 12"
By the way thanks to you & the rest of the Pogues band / crew for some great gigs.I went to Cardiff and both Glasgow this time around. Good luck with the rest of the gig and enjoy the land of the free.
