We were in a hotel bar in New Zealand, he was drinking gin and tonics, me my usual rum and cokes. Conversation was wide-ranging. Cliff seemed amused that Van Morrison had developed a small obsession with the chart positions of their recent single together. I seemed amused that Cliff was in New Zealand for two whole weeks just to rehearse the "choreography" for his upcoming tour. I introduced Cliff to a passing Paul Verner, our lighting designer, who joined the conversation for a short while. I got Cliff's autograph for my Auntie Jean. Any "hilarious consequences" are entirely a predictable figment of Shane's over-ripe imagination and are probably born out of the fact that by the time anyone else, especially Shane, had made it down to the hotel bar, both myself and Cliff had made our separate departures.
