It does vary from country to country. In the UK, for example, I'm registered with MCPS/PRS even for songs which have not been published yet (ie listed as Copyright Control) and they collect from all the other world agencies on my behalf. This was a shrewd move in the case of, for example, The Radiators' "Hinterland" which we played at Croke Park when we opened for U2 last year. Croke Park was a massive IMRO (the Irish collection agency) payout, and I could have been hundreds of pounds out of pocket if I had not registered the song.
Registration should not be an expensive business, but it's 30 years since I started doing this so I'm a bit rusty. I say follow Fintan's excellent leads.
