Oh, I didn't reply to this one. Sorry.

I don't know how one of the Nips' managers (we had two, one of whom was the very first drummer the Pogues had) knew the guys in Mott the Hoople, who lived in Acton or Ealing - must have been Ealing, because, as I say elsewhere in the forums, I used to see them going into the Queen Vic on St Mary's Road when I was at college there - while the Nips' manager lived in Clissold Park. Howard, the manager, fixed up demo time at the house where Buffin (Dale Griffin, as he preferred to be called at that time) lived with Pete Watts, the bass player (Overend was his nickname and I'm not sure I want to go into why). Anyway, Howard fixed up this demo time at their house and, after a long delay, because Shane didn't feel comfortable leaving his neighbourhood - being a bit of a homebody at the time, I remember - and probably not keen that it was just me and him and not the rest of the Nips going down to Ealing (I haven't the foggiest why anyone should have thought it was a good idea for just the guitar player and the singer to try and make a demo and I wonder too if Howard kind of coerced us somehow and wanted to make connections with a couple of guys who he hoped would go on to become, you know, major record producers, or something, which I know Pete Watts and Dale Griffin wanted to do: I had occasion, with another band, to have a record overproduced, I have to say, by them). Anyway, somehow, and eventually, we got down to Ealing and made a demo down there.

This is where what sounded like it was going to be a really interesting story falls flat, because what we did there is lost to memory and where the tapes are, I wouldn't know.

In a pathetic attempt at some sort of payoff to this contribution to the forum, the only real excitement that afternoon was Mott the Hoople's keyboard player - whose name I think, without checking, was Ariel Bender - who lived near Pete Watts and Dale Griffin, and who always seemed to be sort of threateningly imminent somehow, or lurking in the bushes or something. If someone thought they had spotted Ariel Bender outside in the street, Pete Watts and Dale Griffin and Howard would have everyone hide out of sight and keep quiet. Don't know what the story behind that was.
