The most important thing about playing bass is NOT actual techique. The ability to sync in with the drummer, to play right on the kick drum, is of great importance. I would always prefer playing with a bassist with limited "chops", but tight with the drummer, than with one of those "slap-happy - hey Mom-look-at-me" stylists any day. And Darryl definitaly fall into the category of
"in-the-pocket" bassists. A good example is "Birgingham Six" where Darryl and Andrew are just ripping up the chorus.
THAT is a rythym section at work!
