"I wasn't a hedonist. I was just helpless."
When Cait O'Riordan - the former bass guitarist of the Pogues -- arrived in to Today FM to pick her favourite songs for the show, she was brutally honest about the reasons why she had exited the Pogues decades before, two albums into their illustrious career. Alcohol addiction put paid to her stint in the Pogues, but she still has fond memories of those thrilling early days and continues to have a firm bond with lead singer Shane MacGowan.
"Shane's an amazing singer. I was always in awe of his voice. He'll be sixty this Christmas. Think about that. We never thought he'd see 30. He's getting the last laugh on all of us."
The pair met -- appropriately enough -- in a record shop, when Cait was just 17. "One day I walked into a record store and there's the guy," she said. "We became firm kids. He was starting a band. I said I'll play bass. I'd never played bass in my lifetime. That was my beginning in the Pogues."
As well as playing songs from the Pogues and her new band Rogue Oliphant, Cait also picked out classic tracks by Echo and the Bunnymen, U2 and The Pretenders. "1979," Cait recalled of the latter band. "Top of the Pops. Thursday evening. 7.30. Chrissie Hynde. There she was, all fringe, eyeliner and not being likeable in any way."
Cait O'Riordan's Playlist
1. The Ramones 'Baby I Love You'
2. The Pogues 'Dark Streets of London'
3. U2 '11 O'Clock Tick Tock'
4. The Pretenders 'Kid'
5. Peaches and Iggy Pop 'Kick It'
6. Echo and the Bunnymen 'Never Stop'
7. Rogue Oliphant 'Bridge and Tunnel'
8. Solange 'Cranes in the Sky'
