I have a question concerning "Aisling". When I recently visited the GEMA-website where you can see who has got a copyright on songs, I discovered that Shane AND Christy Moore both are credited for the song "Aisling". That made me wonder a bit. Is it because Christy's version of the song is quite a bit different than Shane's original and has got different lyrics and a slightly different melody and harmonies? Or did they really wrote the song together? I know that the song existed in at least 1990 when Shane was with the Pogues, because of the demo version on the wonderful box set. Just made me wonder a little, maybe some of you know some details?
Anyway, Cheers for your attention and have a nice evening!
Good Bye!
The copyright is registered in both "versions" though the Pogues 1990 version was not notified to copyright collection agencies until the box set came out, when I reclaimed 100% of the rights on Shane's behalf. The Pogues recording of course pre-dates Christy's, but informs the modifications he felt he needed to make to turn it into a "Christy Moore song" at a time when there was no reason for him to suppose the Pogues version would be released. It's an unusual situation and not one that happens often in the copyright world. I imagine that any future cover versions would be adjudicated case by case to decide whether they were covers of the MacGowan song or the MacGowan/Moore song.
Ah, interesting stuff. Kind of strange though, that Christy got a credit for it, because his version is not that different (well, yes, it is a "modification"). Anyway, Thanks a lot for your quick and informative answer, Mr. Chevron! Cheers
