the lads can refer to anything. example "im going drinkin with the lads tonight" Derry mucker, I knew what you meant butyou need to be careful, not everyone on this site has sympathetic views on the IRA

I was there that night, when your man was in the toilet, or something. I didn't know the song and asked my Dad if Rocky Road To Dublin had used those lyrics before the version I know, like Rising of The Moon to Wearing Of The Green :(
The rest of the musicians were a little slower to catch on, but it was a cool diversion whilst we were waiting for Body of An American.

Both The Pogues (Bergen '85) and Shane and The Popes (London '94) have done pretty good live versions of The Boys of Kilmichael. Rumour has it that Shane recorded it for the Snake but ZTT made him leave it off.

On one of the last Brixton shows, Shane also kicked into 18th Day of Nov, when Mr Ranken took a time out, I think James also said a few things about that on his journal.

No, not Shane! That doesn't fit in with what I know about him at all.

:p

The point I was really trying to make was Phil's:

Calling the IRA (or the British Army) 'the Lads' or 'Murdering Scum' is really far too simplistic...

Have you tried The Lost Decade, Derry M. ?

PS some said "their <The New Republican's> five-song set included The Rising Of The Moon and The Patriot Game, plus Brendan Behan's The Auld Triangle..."

Shane's pre-pogues/pogue mahone band was the Nipple Erectors, a punk band with no particular 'Irish' agenda.

In the IISFGWG film, the Nips's (incidentally a group with some great songs, like Vengeance, Gabrielle, Happy Song and Infatuation to name but a few) former manager referred to the New Republicans as the Noisy Boysys.

I always thought that was the right name of the British Army? I must be getting it mixed up to them dirty Irish Paddys.

Dave- there have been plenty of atrocities inflicted by all sides in the conflict. Murder is murder. It doesn't matter if it's the British Army, IRA, INLA, UVF or whoever.

True mate, but no need to make remakes like that.

Don't you mean the IRA are known as 'the lads', rather than the other way around? And they're also known as many other things to many other people...

Quite.
