Showbiz has always belonged to the most extreme activities. And (paraphrasing Philip) some popular music stars are safer to escort than others.. 8)

A gentle reminder by The Kerryman:

Musical bill rich in Irish talents

SATURDAY, August 23 will see one of the most exciting and engaging line-ups to ever perform at the Dome take to the stage, with the legendary Sharon Shannon as the main attraction.

One of Ireland’s best loved traditional musicians, Sharon Shannon is known across the globe for her magical ability and talents and the County Clare native, with her ‘Big Band’ are set to rock the Dome in one of the most eagerly anticipated musical events to hit Kerry this year.

Having sold millions of albums across the world, Sharon comes to Tralee hot on the heels of her success in the charts with Mundy on the number one hit ‘Galway Girl’.

Sharon isn’t the only legend that will grace the stage on the Dome that night, she will be also joined by none other than the infamous Shane McGowan, another singer who has gained notoriety for his talents all over the world, as lead singer of The Pogues and as a talented singer/songwriter in his own right.

A national treasure, Galway singer Dessie O’Halloran will also perform on the night. A contemporary talent, Declan O’Rourke is also Dome bound, bringing with him his own unique brand of music.

Declan O’Rourke used to be one of Ireland’s best kept secrets, but rave reviews for his debut double platinum album, ‘Since Kyabram’, a growing international fan base and an enviable collection of eminent devotees, including Paul Weller and Snow Patrol, are rapidly changing that.

The line-up is completed with Jon Kenny, one of Ireland’s most enduring comedic talents, who is sure to have the masses rolling in the aisles. Sharon Shannon and her Big Band will perform in the Dome at Fel’s Point, on Saturday August 23, and will be joined on the night by Shane MacGowan, Dessie O’Halloran and Jon Kenny.

Tickets are on sale now at the Rose of Tralee Festival office for only €36. Those interested in attending are advised to secure their ticket as soon as possible as they are going fast.

"Having not taken a shot worth keeping in over 2 hours, I went to the main hotel, where the press office was, for a coffee. On the outside steps, I passed a guy being interviewed for radio, and did a double take when I saw it was Shane MacGowan, of The Pogues. I waited a couple of minutes for the interview to finish and asked if I could take a quick shot of him. A quick shot turned into about 20 shots, with Shane doing poses against the hotel wall.."
And here you are, lucky guys, with an opportunity to amuse yourself with some great shots: Stephen Power, the photographer who encountered Shane outside that Portlaoise hotel, generously supplied us with results of that photosession.

It was a great gig with in Port Laois and Shane was indeed in great form. I've put a film on You Tube of the man himself singing 'A Thing Called Love' with Joyce Redmond. I think it's a Johnny Cash number but I'm sure someone will point out if it's not.

mike1 wrote:The Dungloe show was in the main street as Philip suggested. Sometime during the day a lorry blocked off the top/upper end of main street and the whole band played from the side of the lorry/stage-it was a tight fit. It was a great show- audience from 8- 80 years young. The only gig i've been to where you could do your shopping in Mace at the same time.

Shane sang Irish Rover, Rainy night in Soho-changed to Dungloe appropriately and Fiesta- he came on stage with Joey Cashman, which is a name I've heard of over the years, but I don't know anything specific. Last time I saw Shane was at the vast Manchester Central last December- had a cracking view last week- close to the stage and Marys!

By the way, Donegal has some of the most beautiful beaches ever. Go if you ever get the chance.

Ah! So you made it, Mike?! A load was taken off my soul ;)

Some reviews:
WOMAD: "Shane McGowan of The Pogues - pissed as a fart, but we didn't give a shite."

"...Shane MacGowan lost his voice years ago – in alcoholic mixers rather instrumental mixes – and as admiring I am of his timeless canon of London-Irish songs, his way-beyond-tiresome cartoon drunken Mick performance was an (albeit extremely well-received) blight to Sharon Shannon's ground-shaking Friday night ceilidh..." -- by conmurphy, World Of Music

"Over at the Siam tent the Ceilidh with Sharon Shannon and special guests Mundy and Damien Dempsey had everybody moving - but the appearance of Shane MacGowan nearly blew the roof off the place, a festival high spot" -- safeconcerts.com

Mary From Dungloe: I remember the festival fondly from my childhood when there was always a great atmostphere, however it has been absolutely rubbish over the last few years. This year the old magic of it was well and truelly back, Shane Mcgowan, Sharon shannon, Mundy and crew were a triumph- and i think there was a vibrancy back as a result of this 'younger' focus. -- Thumpette

The World Fleadh: "The show was a bit weird for me, I was in the pit all night, which was great for photos, but the sound was really bad, the bass bins were on the floor, and the whole place was vibrating, I couldn't hear any of the top end of the mix as that was thrown out over our heads. But the audience loved it, so I guess they heard far more than I did." -- Sean Laffey of Irish Music Magazine. (look for his review, guys!)
