Ah, how little you know him. A complex and contradictory man, sure, but you do well never to underestimate what he is and is not capable of doing.

You hit the nail on the head, there, Philip

10 years ago if you were told that The Pogues would be back together with the full "Classic" line up you wouldn't have believed it at all. So we can only live in hope.

Suitably chastised, I'll have to agree. Mr MacGowan is a man beyond estimation and expectation.

I think.

I mean how the hell do I know - listen to Mr Chevron on this one - it's not like I've ever shared a tourbus or a hotelroom with Shane! :)

Although I bet that that's an 'interesting' experience...

I wouldn't rule this out either.

The uncomfortable truth

The reason that there hasn't been, nor ever will be, a new Pogues album is that Shane can't function at a high enough level to get in the studio and record one. Before I get shot down, trust me, I worship the ground he walks on, meeting him and having a drink with him was the best day of my life, but a new album ain't happening. I doubt greatly if the only reason there's no new Pogues' album is because of contractual obligations on Shane's part. I think it is much more likely that it is one more 'stumbling block' to a new album.

I would imagine that something such as that could be reasonably easily overcome. I understand now that I didn't express what I was trying to say properly: what I had intended to suggest was that it was another in a list of reasons why I don't think there is another Pogues' album in the pipeline any time soon.

All that being said, I should point out that I don't have any inside information here that would sway me either way and Messrs Stacy, Fearnley and Chevron who post here regularly have never given any concrete indication that there would ever be a new Pogues album. Nor have they ruled it out.

Apart from the facts that I stated earlier regarding the record company expenses and such, the above is purely conjecture on my part and should be treated as such.

In any case, I wouldn't hold my breath for a new Pogues' album until you hear it from the horses' mouths.

Peace and love always,

John C.

I'm not going to conjecture about the veridicality of the claim, but if you were the record label that kept a new Pogues album from happening, you would truly be the asshole of the music industry.

Right you are: the album has been lost in contractual hell - it's also been lost in a myriad of expenses for studio time etc.

I have been told that this is just another reason that there won't be a Pogues' album any time soon - Shane is still technically under contract to Eagle records. Well Eagle records seem to think so anyway. Shane has other ideas.

So that's what I know... make of it what you will.

Peace,

John C.
