James Fearnley, pianist with The Pogues recounts how the song started off as a transatlantic love story between an Irish seafarer missing his girl at Christmas before becoming the bittersweet reminiscences of the Irish immigrant down on his luck in the Big Apple, attempting to win back the woman he wooed with promises of 'cars big as bars and rivers of gold'.

I always understood the song was named after the book that Shane's father was reading (or one of his favourite books).

Reading the Wikipedia entry though it suggests it was Jem who was reading it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairytale_of_New_York

I suppose both could be correct.

I read an article not too long ago describing the payments made to artists when songs are played via online streaming services like Pandora or Spotify and, as I recall, there was a minuscule payment for each time a song is played using one of those services. Something like a tenth or hundredth of a cent for each play (the actual number was much more specific and not at all rounded.) I would guess that films are tracked and paid in a similar way.
