actually it's "...christmas is your heaven," pal.

'london you're a lady'

an absolutely stunning set of lyrics that i've been listening to a lot of late (in between large chunks of 'orphans' of course...)

"september is your purgatory, christmas is your hell..."

I remember studying the lyrics to "Inheritance" by New Model Army in English at school... I'm now 31 and I still haven't figured out how the hell Mrs Teacher came up with that one.

For the record I think I was the only one in the class who actually knew the song... (apart from Teach obviously)...

Bit torrent that BBC documentary about the song. It's one whole hour of excellent research for your essay.

There's also "Transmetropolitan" and "Lullaby Of London" of course. And The Clash's "London's Burning". And if you don't specifically need to have "London" in the title, you could look at other Clash songs such as "White Riot", "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais", "Guns Of Brixton"...; The Jam's "Down In The Tube Station At Midnight", "In The City"...

...and of course loads more that I'll think of in a minute.

Haha Fintan that's awesome. I'm going to use that in a poetry class soon. By the way I'm going to write an essay about William Blake's London comparing it to seventies and eighties punk songs about London.

for London, I think maybe Red london-Sham 69, and Streets of london- Anti Nowhere League (but this one's more recent)
If you need something about England, ther're two wonderful songs:
ENGLAND- ANGELIC UPSTARTS
ENGLAND BELONGS TO ME- COCK SPARRER
