I have the old PC running on windows 2000 which should work with the CD's. Rip them to that and save onto USB stick then onto the laptop.

Well, corporate record labels and Windows conspiring together! There's a clusterfuck of evil for ya.

Actually, I do now remember hearing about this at the time, sorry i didn't remember earlier. My music has only been involved with my computer for a few years, so it didn't affect me, but i remember thinking "Bastards! Now they wanna control how we use the products we've already bloody purchased?!"

What a mean. lowdown dirty trick. Penalizing people for stealing music is one thing, punishing them for music they've already bought quite another.

Ok, i've just been searching and this is what i found....

It allegedly seems to be problem with Warner Bros CD's from 2003 to 2008 that had some kind of copy protection that was not industry standard. These were not allowed to be sold in the U.S, only Europe (U.S. CD's appear to be OK). This has only now surfaced when punters like me are using Windows 7 and the Warner Cd's (apparently they are fine on Windows Vista, XP older)

Here's the link to the thread http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-sound/warner-music-cds-sound-is-distorted-on-dell/59931b6e-7e7d-4d88-a438-6afb1a8e3470#848dc7c8-2d18-4b7b-9e69-28ba9805e5e3

The thread is spread out over 2 years and from about page 5 they narrow it down to copy protection and Widows 7

So i'm not imagining it. :D But no fix yet :(

I'm going to do some digging on other boards to see if i can find out why these particular discs won't play on the laptop.

Fr. McGreer wrote:OK...... My laptop doesn't like The Pogues!

None of the reissued albums from 2006 will play or rip without total distortion (tons interference like white noise). Neither will disc 1 or 2 from The Ultimate Collection, again purchased on first release. All of these play perfectly on a standard CD player (in my car).

The more recent Look Them Straight..... plays and rips perfectly.

All other CD's i tried:

Beautiful South Greatest Hits (purchased 1994)
Essential Elvis Presley (2007)
Sampled (2000) Great compilation album by the way, dig it out.
Anthony and the Johnsons, I Am A Bird Now (2004)
Johnny Cash Live at Folsom (2006)

All these played and ripped perfectly.

How mad is that??? :?

Thanks so much your quick replies Low & Phil.

I initially ripped the Peace & Love album using windows media player and the sound was totally distorted. Tried iTunes and same result so went with Low D and tried MP3 (192kb) and also WAV Lossless. Still same. The IISFFGWG album is the same. I have just ripped some tracks from Look Them Straight...... and perfect quality.

I've never had problems before and the laptop is only 6 months old.

I'm gonna try some tracks off the other reissues and also a couple of random CD's to check the drive is definately ok.

Watch this space, folks.

I haven't heard of this problem before and, though I've no reason to believe there are copying problems, do at least bear in mind that US, Japanese and UK versions of the Expanded/Remastered editions, though they use identical mastering, may not be pecisely the same if, for example, they have different digital encoding. I don't say they do (I don't know) just that it's worth considering if the problem persists after Low D's troubleshooting steps. Please let me know what happens, either way.

I've had my copies of the reissues since they were released in '06 but have only now got around to uploading them to my laptop so i can listen to the bonus tracks on the iPod.

I have a problem though. The sound is totally distorted and unlistenable when uploaded. They play perfectly on CD players, so is this some sort of copy protect system? Has anyone else had any problems with this?

Mine have ripped fine, so it's unlikely to be the discs. The first thing is to check your settings. You using iTunes? Go to ITUNES>PREFRENCES>GENERAL>IMPORT SETTINGS. If it's set for MP3 96 KBPS or something that might be your problem, pick a higher quality.

If that's not it, your drive might be faulty.

Another Just wanted to say (about Peace and Love)

Post by Jakub - Pyro Wed Nov 23, 2011 9:29 pm

I just wanted to say that I bought the reissued version of Peace and Love (as an experiment - why to buy almost the same thing?) - and I have to say I was delighted when listening to it. Not only I found the bonus tracks great, but the new sound is lovely too! More modern and all that...

Will buy more reissued CDs soon :)
Have a nice day!
