Sunday night's show exceeded all expectations, and I was REALLY afraid I'd over-psyched myself by immersing myself in the Pogues for weeks before the show. My sweetheart, my mates and I hung in our hotel drinking carbombs, went to O'Lunney's for bangers & mash, then went to the show - we were 6 people back from the stage, about the center. Caught the end of Seanchai, dug with pipes in the Sly song. HATED Towers of London - when they started pissing and moaning about people throwing stuff I yelled "You're opening for the POGUES - what do you expect?" They should've played first, or not at all.
<br>
I thought it was very cool that so much of the audience sang all of "Straight To Hell".
<br>
Once the Pogues started it was as I expected - the place EXPLODED. My girl was getting groped from all angles so after 2 songs we went back a bit to calmer waters.
<br>
I won't go into too many details - it was all so fantastic, and paced so well - with so many other wonderful vocalists and a kick-arse instrumental to break things up. All of the non-Shane songs were seriously great - "Young Ned" was breathtaking, I've always had a weak spot for "Tuesday Morning" whether I should or not, The Clobberer did a great job on "Star" and hearing "Thousands Are Sailing" IN Times Square - well, it just seemed like a dream. Philip, that was world-class.
<br>
But I can't find words to describe how much Shane's performance meant to ALL of us "American c*nts", as he called us - it was magic, WAY beyond mere "entertainment", although it WAS entertaining as hell. I will NEVER forget that show. I pray for more, but whatever happens, I know I will arrive in heaven a half an hour before the devil knows I'm dead, because I have seen the Pogues.
<br>
Thank you for making so many dreams come true during your brief visit. I hope you all went home knowing that America - the coolest part of it, anyway - loves you.
